Dishwashers are designed to make life easier. But don't count on them to completely free you from manual work. Certain types of kitchen utensils and items are not suitable for washing in the dishwasher. In addition, you must be able to place the dishes correctly in the mechanism.

Preliminary preparation of PMM

Before you start loading dishes and pressing the “Start” button, do not forget to pour salt for PMM into the compartment intended for this. Do this about once a month. Regardless of the detergent chosen (“3 in 1”, “7 in 1”, etc.), we do not recommend neglecting salt. The equipment will last longer, and the dishes will be cleaner.

The same goes for mouthwash. Despite the use of multifunctional products, the rinsing gel will add shine to clean dishes and will not leave powder streaks on them.

Inspect machine filters periodically, clean them or replace them if necessary. First of all, clean the filter located on the pipe connected to the water supply.

Check the tightness of the hose connection. Make sure the spray arms are clean and rotate freely. Food often gets clogged into the holes if it is not removed from the dishes before loading into the PMM.

If you have not used the appliance for more than three days, run one wash cycle without dishes. This will remove stagnant water from the pipes.

Disassemble dishes consisting of several parts. If this is not done, strong water pressure may damage the connecting elements. If there are a lot of dishes, sort them by type.

Remove any remaining food from the dishes; rinse items with dried dirt immediately before loading. If the stains are strong, pre-soak for half an hour to an hour in warm water.

Attention! When soaking dishes, do not use conventional hand washing products. They will lead to excessive foaming and can damage the equipment.

Can kitchen utensils be washed in the dishwasher?

This question is difficult to answer if you don’t know what material the dishes are made of. . For example, wooden objects are not intended for mechanical washing. Therefore, wooden boards will have to be cleaned manually. Stainless steel ladles and skimmers can be washed in PMM. They are laid horizontally.

As for plastic items, for example, spatulas, in most cases they can also be washed in a PMM. But here everything depends on the plastic itself. For example, plastic ladles and spatulas included with the multicooker are machine washable.

This is written in the instructions for the household appliances themselves. It is better to place such items on top, and plastic boards on the sides. Spatulas and ladles with short handles can also be placed in the cutlery tray.

Rules for loading cutlery

Each PMM has a place reserved for cutlery. These are either shelves on top, designed for their horizontal arrangement, or special removable baskets (most often). In the latter, spoons, forks and knives are arranged vertically in a certain pattern.

The knives are installed with the tip down so that they do not scratch the inner surface of the PMM. The remaining appliances are placed in the basket with their handles facing down. The quality of washing will decrease if cutlery is placed too closely together.

It is recommended to alternate them with each other (fork, knife, tablespoon, knife, etc.). Teaspoons are placed closer to the center of the cutlery basket. Large utensils are placed horizontally at the top of the PMM, otherwise they will block the spray nozzles.

Advice! It is best to care for sharp knives by hand. Washing in a PMM quickly dulls the blades.

How to place cups, glasses, glasses and wine glasses

Drink items are placed in the upper basket at a slight angle, bottom to top. For glasses, the basket has removable elements with recesses. They hold the stems of the wine glasses during washing. Small coffee cups are placed on top of such elements.


How to stack plates and bowls

Small bowls, dessert and pie plates are placed in the upper basket. There is also space for gravy boats, bowls, salt shakers and bowls. The lower basket is designed for soups and large plates. In this case, large dishes are placed on the sides, and smaller plates are located in the center of the tray. This allows water to reach the upper basket.

In case of heavy contamination, the plates are placed through one hole, increasing the space between them.

How to arrange pans and pots

Pots and pans are placed in the lower compartment of the PMM. Removable handles are removed and placed separately. Pots are installed upside down, and pans are installed vertically, slightly at an angle. Baking dishes and baking sheets are also washed in a vertical position. Large dishes are placed along the edges of the lower compartment.

Dishes that are not dishwasher safe


Due to the high temperatures and detergents used in the PMM, not all dishes can be processed in the machine.

Items made from the following materials are not dishwasher compatible:

  • aluminum– darkens from prolonged exposure to water and hot steam;
  • tree– deteriorates under the influence of moisture and temperature changes;
  • cast iron– the protective layer is washed off and rust appears;
  • copper, tin and silver– oxidize and turn black;
  • porcelain and plastic– most varieties of these materials do not tolerate temperature changes well, but some PMMs have special short-term and low-temperature programs for them.
  • frying pans with Teflon coating - under the influence of aggressive detergents, the protective layer is washed off and they lose their non-stick properties;
  • sharp knives – when very hot, they become dull;
  • utensils with decorative painting - the paint may wash off;
  • dishes with a vacuum lid and seal - hot water breaks the seal, the seal deteriorates;
  • objects stained with paint, ash, grease, wax will stain the equipment and lead to its clogging;
  • devices with rust - washing in PMM will lead to even greater destruction and the appearance of corrosion on metal objects that have not yet been touched.

When purchasing kitchen items, pay attention to the labeling. Manufacturers usually write on the label whether they are dishwasher safe.

How many dishes to load per wash cycle

So, how many plates, pans, and cutlery will fit in the PMM? This depends on the size of the dishwasher. The instructions for the equipment always indicate its maximum capacity. It is expressed in sets.

A standard dishwasher can hold up to 12 sets, a full-size dishwasher can hold up to 16, a narrow dishwasher can hold 9, and a compact dishwasher can hold no more than 6. By a set, the manufacturer means 2 plates, a saucer, a cup, a glass and cutlery. But in reality, when you have to load additional pots and pans, much fewer sets of dishes will fit.

As we can see, the capacity of the PMM can vary greatly. But there are general rules, following which you will always be satisfied with the washing result.

  1. Before putting the dishes in the machine, make sure that they are intended for washing in the washing machine. Wash fragile glass glasses and thin plastic products only in special modes at a water temperature not exceeding 45°C and a washing duration of up to 1.5 hours.
  2. Do not load the PMM with dishes to the maximum. Leave a small distance between objects so that they do not touch each other. This way the products will be cleaned better.
  3. It is better to wash heavily soiled pots and pans separately from glasses, plates and mugs. For them, modern PMMs provide a special high-temperature regime with a longer washing cycle.
  4. Remove dirty dishes from the PMM immediately after eating. This way, food residues will not dry out and will wash off well. Rinse dishes with dried dirt first.

Conclusion

It doesn’t matter what brand and capacity you have. For good results, it is important to load the dishwasher correctly. This is 80% of success, and only the remaining 20% ​​is detergents.

  • aluminum– darkens from prolonged exposure to hot steam and water;
  • silver, copper and tin– oxidize, changing their original color;
  • cast iron– loses its protective layer, which causes it to oxidize, resulting in rust;
  • plastic, porcelain– not all varieties of these materials react normally to high temperatures.

Experts do not recommend putting it in PMM carving knives, since temperature changes make them dull. Also, do not place it in a tray. Teflon coated products– the material is simply washed off under the influence of an aggressive environment during the washing process. As a result, the food in such dishes will begin to burn during cooking.

Food containers with vacuum lids and seals may lose their sealing properties after being put in the dishwasher.

How to properly place dishes in the dishwasher

How to stack cups, glasses and wine glasses

If you place your dishes in the dishwasher correctly, it will clean as efficiently as possible. Drinking items are placed upside down in the upper basket, in an inclined position. This is necessary so that the washing and rinsing liquid thoroughly treats the inner surface and not the outer surface.

For wine glasses and glasses, special recesses are provided in which the stems are held during washing.

We arrange bowls, plates, gravy boats, salt shakers

If possible, place small containers - such as gravy boats, bowls and salt shakers - in the upper compartment. They need to be installed upside down - just like glasses and cups.

Medium and large sized plates should fit in the lower basket in an upright position. Place objects with the largest diameter closer to the edges, and smaller ones closer to the central part. The baking trays are also washed in a vertical position. Place larger items at the edges of the lower basket. Try to keep the gap between them larger.

When purchasing a dishwasher, manufacturers indicate its capacity in the form of the number of dishwasher sets. A set of dishes refers to items in the quantity that one person will need to eat, which is a relative value.

Please take into account that in a PMM designed for 18 sets, in reality no more than 15-16 of them will fit. Not all dishes used in the kitchen fit the size standard used by manufacturers when determining the capacity of dishwashers.

Always arrange kitchen utensils in such a way that they did not interfere with the rotation of the rocker arms spraying cleaning liquid. To do this, rotate the sprinkler by hand and make sure that it does not touch vertical objects.

Use only the one for washing household chemicals that are specifically designed for dishwashers. Do not try to use detergents to wash dishes by hand - they will quickly damage the dishwasher. Several times a year, add substances to the chemicals that remove scale deposits on PMM surfaces.

You need to place spoons and forks freely and it is better to alternate them with each other, this will be correct. If you stack the spoons tightly together, they will not be washed. Knives should be placed with the blades down.

New dishwasher models, such as those from Bosch, have a top tray for cutlery. The placement of spoons in such a tray is horizontal. This ensures not only high-quality dishwashing, but also economical distribution of space inside the dishwasher. In addition, horizontal placement of spoons, forks and knives is safer.

Important! It is not recommended to wash sharp and ceramic knives in the dishwasher, as the blade may become dull. You cannot wash knives with wooden handles, as the wood will swell from prolonged exposure to water.

How to arrange pans and pots

As for large utensils necessary for cooking: frying pans, pots, saucepans, baking sheets, etc., they are placed in the lower container. It is best to wash such dishes separately from glassware, porcelain and crystal, choosing a more intensive mode at high temperature.

So, frying pans and baking sheets must be placed sideways, and pans upside down or at an angle. This is the only way to ensure maximum access of water to all dishes in the dishwasher. If you place the pans upside down, they will block access to the upper tray.

Important! Some frying pans and other utensils coated with Teflon are prohibited from being washed in the dishwasher by their manufacturer, so be careful.

If the handle comes off the pan, be sure to remove it. Place the pan with the handle so that it does not touch the walls of the dishwasher. When the pots are positioned as in the photo below, access to the top tray with dishes will be limited, so we do not recommend putting anything in it. In this case, you can use the “Half Load” function, which will save not only water, but also electricity. It is correct to place the baking sheets sideways along the edges of the lower tray of the dishwasher; even if there is no special attachment, the access of water from the lower spray arm will be sufficient.

Can kitchen utensils be washed in the dishwasher?

Kitchen utensils, which include cutting boards, ladles, skimmers, and spatulas, can be washed in the dishwasher only if the spatulas and boards are not wooden and preferably not plastic. Plastic spatulas can be placed in the topmost utensil tray, cutting boards in the side compartments of the lower or upper tray, depending on the size of the board. But if possible, it is better to wash the boards by hand.

Ladles and spatulas should only be placed horizontally; even if there is no special compartment for them, there is enough space for them in the upper compartment.

When placing dishes in the dishwasher according to all the rules, the question arises of how many dishes can be washed in one cycle. The manufacturer indicates in the instructions the capacity in the number of sets. Small machines can hold up to 6 sets, narrow ones up to 11 and full-size up to 17 sets of dishes.

However, the sets may differ not in quantity, but in the size of the plates. Additionally, some may only use soup and salad bowls and no saucers. Therefore, the load on the machine may differ in different families. We suggest following a few more rules for placing dishes in the dishwasher:

  • You should not load the machine with dishes to the maximum, a larger gap between items will allow for better rinsing of the products, and especially do not overload the machine;
  • before putting any item in the dishwasher, make sure that it can be washed in it, especially for plastic products, fragile glass and crystal goblets;
  • place objects so that they do not touch each other;
  • If possible, wash pans and pots separately from plates, mugs and glasses;
  • Do not wash wooden items in the dishwasher;
  • If you prefer to collect all the dishes in a day, then it is better to immediately place dirty plates in the washing machine; they will not dry out in it and will be easier to wash later.
