Registration of major's shoulder straps. How to attach stars to shoulder straps

27.10.2023 Warm floor

Brief information about the shoulder straps of officers and warrant officers of the Russian police

First, let's note one important point. In Russia, officers shoulder straps military personnel and employees police have the same appearance. Naturally, we are talking here about the size of the stars and their location. This, by the way, also applies to warrant officers. The colors, of course, will be different everywhere. Accordingly, in order to find out the rank of an employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, you need to look at the size of the stars on his shoulder straps (large or small), their number and location. After all, all the parameters here are regulated by the relevant order. This means that the perpetrator may be subject to disciplinary action for violations.

All ranks in Russian police distributed generally into 4 groups of commanding staff:

Let's look at these points in more detail. First, let's determine how many stars correspond to a particular title. In addition, let's clarify their size. So, the following rules currently apply in the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The diameter of the stars for petty officers, warrant officers, lieutenants and captains is 13 millimeters each. Moreover, their number, as mentioned above, differs depending on the rank, and sergeants and sergeants have stripes on their shoulder straps. The lieutenant has 2 stars (the senior has 3), the captain has 4.

Now we move on to the senior command staff. All ranks of this group have two longitudinal stripes of red color on their shoulder straps - they are also called clearance. By the way, junior command staff also have them, but one at a time. The number of stars is from 1 to 3. The youngest rank here is major. On the chase in this case there is 1 star with a diameter of 20 millimeters, located on the center line.

More senior ranks - lieutenant colonel And Colonel. They have 2 and 3 20mm stars on their shoulder straps, respectively.

And finally, the senior management - major general , lieutenant general , Colonel General and general police. The first three ranks have 1, 2 and 3 22mm stars on their shoulder straps, respectively. Separately, it is worth dwelling on the title of “police general”. Currently, it has been assigned to only one person - the current head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. If someone else replaces him in this position, the ex-minister will be called general police retired. The thing is that the titles are assigned to law enforcement officers forever. Well, the minister’s successor, accordingly, will become a general police. In this case, it is easy to understand that this is the most important person in this structure. In pursuit of the general police 1 star with a diameter of 40 millimeters.

Now let's look at one more point. It's about the distance from the edge shoulder strap to the center of the first star. This is regulated very strictly. In particular, here are the distances for different ranks (the numbers in millimeters are given in parentheses):

These are not all the numbers that matter. If employees police If there are several stars on the shoulder straps, then the distance between them should be exactly 25 millimeters. In fact, all the requirements listed above remain from Soviet times. Therefore, knowledgeable people can easily distinguish a lieutenant from a lieutenant colonel. The location of the stars on their shoulder straps is the same, but the size is different. The diameter of a lieutenant colonel, as mentioned above, is 20 millimeters versus 13 for a lieutenant. By the same criterion one can also distinguish a major from an ensign.

There are also requirements for the placement of chevrons on the sleeve. They can be sewn on or secured with Velcro. However, the first option is considered more reliable. That is, the risk of accidentally losing chevron and thereby disrupting the uniform of clothing is much higher here. Therefore, despite the innovation, almost all employees police still sewn chevron at the required distance of -8 centimeters from the edge of the shoulder. The only exception is made for winter jackets. If they have an outer pocket on the sleeve, then chevron should be located in its central part. In this case, the requirement to maintain a distance of 8 centimeters from the edge of the shoulder may not be adhered to.

Now let's talk about the "Police" patches on jackets. There are also certain requirements for their location. So, stripe on the back should be located at a distance of 1 centimeter from the red transverse line there. Approximately the same rule applies to “facials”. Only in this stripe located at a distance of 1 centimeter above the patch pocket.

As we can see, after the Russian police became the police, no fundamentally new requirements for shoulder straps, chevrons and stripes appeared. Naturally, in this case we are talking about the number, size of stars and their location. The requirements for the location of chevrons and stripes remain the same. Their appearance has undergone quite significant changes in color. Well, of course, instead of the previous inscription “Police”, the uniform of law enforcement officers now bears a new word – “Police”.

Service in the police and the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation requires the possession of certain qualities that contribute to career advancement. It may seem to an ordinary person that there is no more responsible thing in the world than being a military man.

Employees, as a rule, have a proud posture, excellent bearing and are quite scrupulous. The higher a person's rank, the more these qualities manifest themselves. However, outwardly this is reflected solely by the number and size of stars on the shoulder straps. They can be used to determine a military career, which for many becomes the main guideline in life.

It would seem that it is enough to get a lieutenant and you don’t have to pursue a career any further. But, as practice shows, this is far from the case. Many strive for more. Such zeal among police and military men persists into old age and is subsequently passed on to family members.

Junior squad

Anyone who wants to build a career in the police or army will have to overcome a significant distance.

Using the example of the police, the hierarchy has remained virtually unchanged since Soviet times. The very first rank that an employee receives is private. This already means that the person is included in the ranks of employees, but his responsibilities at the moment are quite insignificant.

The first working year passes as the accumulation of a high-quality reputation. At the end of this period, in the absence of serious comments, further career advancement occurs.

The next step is junior sergeant. Service for another year allows you to become a sergeant. A person must work with this rank for at least two years, and subsequently is awarded the rank of senior sergeant. At this level you must serve for three years.

Junior police work is extended to the rank of warrant officer. The employee works in this status for 5 years.

Average composition

Mid-ranking police officers initially receive the rank of junior lieutenant. Shoulder straps are significantly different from sergeant's. After a year of service, it is quite possible to become a real lieutenant. The length of service with such shoulder straps is two years. Increased professional rights occur after promotion to senior lieutenant (service time 3 years).

During this time, the person gains the necessary experience in order to be promoted to captain.

What does a police lieutenant's shoulder straps look like?

Each rank in the police hierarchy has distinctive characteristics on its shoulder straps. These may include the following characteristics:

  1. Number of stripes.
  2. Star size.
  3. Color.

The shoulder straps of a police lieutenant have a vertical stripe (clearance), this applies to senior and junior officers. As the rank increases, the number of stars increases from two to four.

The captain is given shoulder straps with one large star, which is placed in the center.

High-ranking police officers receive shoulder straps with two lumens and two and three stars, respectively.

Colonels and more authorized personnel wear shoulder straps without vertical stripes, and the stars are located along the badge.

Distance between stars on shoulder straps

Depending on the composition of the police officer, the sizes of the fixed stars differ:

  1. 13 mm is received by workers from warrant officer to captain.
  2. From the rank of major to colonel - 20 mm.
  3. Higher positions require 22 mm stars on shoulder straps.

The junior police lieutenant has one star on his shoulder straps, which is located at a distance of 45 mm from the edge.

Senior positions (lieutenant, senior lieutenant) require maintaining a distance of 25 mm from the edges and centers of stars that are located nearby.

A few words about the appearance of shoulder straps

The most interesting fact about the rank of lieutenant is that the word itself originated in France. After some time it was adopted by Spain. Only several centuries later this word appeared in our open spaces and meant the title of an officer of the Russian fleet. This rank was preceded by second lieutenant.

In those days, officer shoulder straps were significantly different from the new model and were sewn exclusively on one side of the clothing. The main purpose of such patches was to use them as holders for travel bags. Horseback riding did not provide for securing luggage.

Special ranks are awarded to those who serve in the army. This allows you to maintain subordination and build a clear hierarchy of subordinates and superiors. There are 30 military ranks in the armed forces of the Russian Federation. The rank of sergeant belongs to the non-officer rank. Ordinary soldiers will receive the rank of junior sergeant for special services. Next comes the sergeant, then the staff sergeant. Each rank has its own shoulder straps.

Military personnel are distinguished from civilians by their uniforms, which contain insignia. Using these unique signs, military personnel distinguish among themselves belonging to the branch of the military, department, rank, and military ranks.

Insignia are special elements on clothing that convey information about the owner through color, shape, and size. They were placed in different eras on the head, arms, neck, and shoulders. Of the insignia, history has preserved epaulettes, stripes, cockades, shoulder straps, buttons, chevrons, piping, and other decorative elements. Currently, insignia are worn not only in the armed forces, but also in the prosecutor's office, the mountain rescue service, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, Cossack societies, the small boat inspection, and other organizations.

Assignment of title

Men who came to serve in the Armed Forces are assigned the first rank - privates. Contract soldiers can receive the following military rank after 5 months of impeccable service. The squad leader can receive the rank of junior sergeant if he proves himself to be a reliable subordinate during the period of service. He must be disciplined, organized, demanding of himself and others. If the corporal wants to serve under a contract, and not resign after military service, then he will also be assigned the next military rank. Only after serving as a corporal for 3 months can you receive the rank of junior sergeant.

The military rank above corporal is junior sergeant; he can become the commander of a combat vehicle, a tank, or an entire squad. As an exception, for good service, the rank of junior sergeant can be given upon transfer to the reserve to a corporal who was not in a regular position. The junior sergeant's shoulder straps will have one thin stripe.

Sergeant is already a military rank of junior command personnel. He is a squad leader who conducts combat exercises, manages daily operations, and is the commander of a combat vehicle or tank.

Senior sergeant – deputy platoon commander. Manages the Soldier team in daily activities and during practical exercises in the field.

Sergeant major is the highest rank of non-commissioned officers; this is a company official. He is responsible for the correct performance of official duties by sergeants and ordinary soldiers. Subordinate to the company commander (ensign).

A potential candidate for sergeant rank must:

  • to serve with dignity;
  • know the regulations of the armed forces of the Russian Federation;
  • be able to handle weapons;
  • have leadership qualities;
  • navigate difficult situations, quickly find non-standard solutions;
  • have secondary education;
  • have no criminal record.

Candidates for the rank of sergeant undergo training under a special program in the training unit. Upon passing all the standards, they receive the rank and shoulder straps of sergeant.

There is another way to become a sergeant - to enroll in a higher military educational institution. The cadets there are sergeants.

Deprivation of rank

As punishment for misdeeds or crimes, a delay in the assignment of the next rank or its deprivation may be imposed.

The grounds for such actions may be:

  • violation of the law, in connection with which a criminal case is initiated;
  • written disciplinary action;
  • An inspection is underway to identify any violations.

In this case, the next rank is not awarded as long as the investigation into the case continues or he is deprived of his military rank.

The disciplinary measure is demotion in rank. Sometimes immediate superiors do this when there is a more suitable representative for a full-time position. They are also demoted due to negligence in official matters or failure to fulfill official duties. Restoration can be done no earlier than in a year.

Early assignment to the next rank

Depending on the set of parameters (education, knowledge of military affairs, position held, length of service), the following ranks are assigned. To become a junior sergeant, you need to serve in the Russian army for at least a year. It will be possible to advance to another title only after 2 years. It is possible to move from sergeants to senior sergeants in just 3 years. You can become a sergeant major after a senior sergeant depending on your personal data. Here length of service does not matter much.

In some cases, early assignment of military rank is possible. This is possible for special merit, as the law formulates. This should be understood as a conscientious act, which is associated with over-fulfillment of one’s duties.

Buttonholes as a badge of honor

After the revolution of 1917, the symbols of the tsarist army were banned. In 1918, the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army was created. It was necessary to come up with new insignia for her. For some time they used sleeve stripes and red cloth stars on the headdress or chest.

Since 1924, the ranks of military personnel began to be distinguished by buttonholes, which were located on the collar of the shirt. The colors indicated the type of troops. Infantry had a crimson color with a black border, cavalry had a blue background with a black border, signalmen were distinguished by a black buttonhole with a yellow border. The buttonholes of leaders and army commanders were colored according to the type of troops, but the edging was trimmed with golden-colored cord.

In the field of the buttonhole there was a copper figure made of red enamel. She helped determine the rank of an army soldier. The buttonholes of ordinary and junior employees were empty; in 1941 they began to make a triangle with sides of 10 mm. The middle command staff had squares in their buttonholes. Senior commanders wore rectangles, which were popularly called sleepers. Senior commanders had a diamond. A special insignia was a chevron made of gold braid on the sleeve of the uniform. The Marshal of the USSR had a large gold star in his buttonholes and on his sleeve.

The system of distinctions in the army changed frequently, this greatly complicated the situation. Due to supply disruptions, some units may have worn old uniforms or hand-made insignia for a long time. The buttonhole system was canceled, but after it the distribution of colors by type of troops remained.

Shoulder straps in our time

Military rank can be determined by the characteristics of the shoulder straps. Sewn on sergeant's shoulder straps in red. In the aviation, airborne, and aerospace forces, the shoulder straps are blue. Dress shirts are green. The field uniform has detachable sergeant shoulder straps in camouflage colors.

Sergeant shoulder straps have a distance of 25 mm from the edge of the shoulder straps to the first stripe. To distinguish junior employees in the Russian army, badges are used. These are special trailer strips. The junior sergeant's stripes have one stripe. The next military rank has two narrow 10 mm sergeant stripes on its shoulder straps. The distance between the tabs is 5 mm. The senior sergeant has one wide stripe on his shoulder straps - a stripe.

Sergeant of the Ground Forces and Sergeant Major of the Navy, these ranks correspond to each other, they have shoulder straps of a similar pattern. The upper part of the shoulder strap has the shape of a trapezoid, with a button located on it. The color of the shoulder straps of the Russian armed forces is dark green for everyday uniforms, for the field version - camouflage shoulder straps. Sailors have black shoulder straps.

The galloon on the shoulder straps comes in different colors; it indicates the type of military service. The shoulder straps of the Airborne Forces and Aviation are edged with blue braid, and red for all other branches of the Russian army. The Navy has galloons on the shoulder straps of a white shade.

At a distance of 15 mm from the bottom edge of everyday shoulder straps there are the letters “VS” - Armed Forces or “F” - navy, embossed with golden threads. Shoulder straps for field exercises do not have such inscriptions. On the shoulder straps, sergeant major is the highest rank of non-commissioned officers and has the emblem of the military branch.

New requirements for wearing shoulder straps have been established since 2017. Removable shoulder straps are attached to the uniform jacket. Epaulets with a field of specially woven braid are sewn onto everyday uniforms. On outerwear and woolen items, removable shoulder straps are attached with a field of galloon.

Quite often it seems to us that there is nothing more responsible than being a military man. Service people often have excellent bearing, maintain a proud posture and are very scrupulous. It has been noticed that with increasing rank, these qualities in a person become more and more obvious. Although in this case only the number and size of stars on the shoulder straps change externally. It is by them that a person himself is judged, about his military career, which for many becomes the main goal in life. And they, without sparing themselves, serve their homeland. Only having acquired the desired shoulder straps, the lieutenant, it would seem, can relax and no longer pursue a career, but the character of a military man is incorrigible - he strives for new heights and victories. For many men, this hardening persists until old age and is gradually passed on to family members.

About military ranks and positions: junior personnel

Every person who dreams of making a career in the ranks of military personnel will need to go through a long and thorny path. Take, for example, the hierarchy that operates within the ranks of the police. It should be noted that so far it has not undergone any changes and remains the same as it was under the police during Soviet times. The initial step is to achieve the rank of private. This means that the person is enrolled in the ranks of law enforcement officers, but his powers are by no means great. Within one year, the private creates an excellent reputation for himself and, in the absence of serious criticism, continues to climb the career ladder.

The next stage is the rank of junior sergeant. After serving another year with this title, a person moves on to a more respectable one - sergeant. This stage of military service in the police requires a period of service of two years. After which he is awarded this rank, the police representative serves for three years. After the required period has expired, the sergeant is transformed into an ensign. This rank is the final one for junior commanding officers and requires a mandatory service of five years.

Average composition

It includes employees who have received the rank of junior lieutenant. The shoulder straps in this case are already different from the previous sergeants. A police officer in this rank, under conditions of exemplary performance, becomes a real lieutenant after a year. The lieutenant wears his shoulder straps until his two-year term expires. The next step in the military career ladder is obtaining a similar position, but with greater professional rights. A police officer is required to serve three years in the rank of senior lieutenant. During this time, he gains more experience, enough to become a captain. Receiving new powers demonstrates significant achievements of the police officer. Before moving to the next echelon of power, he is required to serve with this rank for three years.

Senior staff

This category is rightfully considered the most privileged among the military, since not everyone manages to get a position related to it. By changing the rank of captain to major, a police officer receives new licenses and shoulder straps. He uses them for at best four years, subject to excellent service. Then the officer moves to the rank of lieutenant colonel, and after a five-year term - colonel.

Differences between shoulder straps

Each rank is characterized by distinctive features on its shoulder straps. It can be a different number of stripes, size of stars, color. For example, sergeants do not have stars on their shoulder straps; they begin to appear only with the rank of ensign. In the average composition, the shoulder straps of a police lieutenant, junior and senior, have a vertical stripe called a clearance. As the position increases, the number of stars moves from two to four. The captain receives one, but large star, placed in the center. High-ranking police officers, major and lieutenant colonel, wear shoulder straps with two gaps, on which two and three stars are located, respectively. Starting with the Colonel, vertical stripes no longer occur, and stars (from one) are located along the sign.

Star placement requirements

From ensign to captain, the stars have a diameter of 13 mm. From the rank of major to colonel - 20 mm. And all senior positions are distinguished by the star size of 22 mm. On ensign's shoulder straps, the distance from the end of the badge to the center of the star and the space between the latter is 25 mm. The junior lieutenant has one on his shoulder straps, it is located 45 mm from the edge. As for senior positions, the distance of the stars on the shoulder straps of a lieutenant and senior lieutenant should be 25 mm from the edges and centers of neighboring ones. Similar indicators apply to ranks other than major and major general. On their shoulder straps, the indentation from the edge to the center of the star is 45 mm.

The history of the appearance of shoulder straps as distinctive signs

One of the most curious is the fact of the original purpose of people with the title of lieutenant. The word itself appeared in France and was adopted by Spain, and only several centuries later began to denote the title of an officer of the Russian fleet. In terms of its significance, it was preceded by the rank of second lieutenant, which has become obsolete on the territory of the state. Then the officer's shoulder straps had a different look and were somewhat different from modern ones. They were used as travel bag holders, since horseback riding did not allow for luggage to be secured. In those days, such a device was sewn onto only one side of clothing. In addition to convenience and practicality, they also had another purpose. They began to be used as an original accessory to military clothing, after which they began to symbolize belonging to a certain regiment or division. And only then they were used as an indicator of military position. The conditions for military personnel to receive this rank also differed from modern ones: it was awarded after the end of the training period in specialized institutions and

Locations of shoulder straps and special marks on military clothing

Mostly the lieutenant wears shoulder straps on his shoulders, securing them to his shirt or jacket. During the cold season, special military marks are also attached to outerwear. They are also complemented by special headdresses. The signs themselves can be removable or sewn on, depending on the nature of the clothing. In addition to them, there are also special lapel and sleeve symbols that differ in length, thickness and color. Most often they are golden in color and placed on a dark background.

Types of shoulder insignia

For police officers, as well as other representatives of the military service, there are several types of marks to indicate rank. So, there are ceremonial shoulder straps for a lieutenant, photos of which can be seen here. They are usually worn on the occasion of holidays and ceremonial meetings. In addition to them, there are simple everyday shoulder straps that are attached to a soldier’s daily uniform. If necessary, they can be replaced with newer ones, with real stars or embroidery with gold threads. Almost every officer can take advantage of a similar opportunity. The senior (photo attached) can choose similar ones to those presented in this article.

The value of shoulder straps grows with the rank

For every person who has completed military service, the significance of various signs and marks is extremely great. For their sake, they go on dangerous missions, risk their own lives, and pride in every successful step fills the soul. The lieutenant wears his shoulder straps with the same dignity as the scars from battle wounds. They strive to earn them from the rank of a simple private, and for many they become the most desired reward for their work.

Despite the difficulties of continuous and long-term service to their state in the ranks of law enforcement agencies, the navy, the air force or any other spheres of military activity, valiant officers fulfill their duties with dignity. In such situations, they perceive promotion as gratitude and encouragement for impeccable service. The honor and courage of a person, embodied in the stars on his shoulder straps, become a kind of characteristic. Based on what the officer has achieved, his colleagues form their own opinion about him and his personal qualities. Perhaps this is one of the many reasons why women have a weakness for men in uniform, and men from childhood dream of becoming defenders of their fatherland and wearing epaulets on their uniforms with honor.
