Soldiers were the first victims of the disease. At first, everything was attributed to the toxic effect of mustard gas used by Germany against the Anglo-French troops. When not only the soldiers began to fall ill (and on both sides), the doctors sounded the alarm. It became clear that humanity was faced with something like a virus, but no one knew how to deal with it.

The illness manifested itself in a variety of ways, usually starting, like a simple flu, with chills, weakness, and headache. In some cases, patients became numb immediately, bypassing the acute stage. Most of the patients were in the age group of 15-35 years. Less than a third were able to wake up and recover, another third - about 5 million - died.

The rest remained motionless statues, and only special care kept them alive. The "asleep" patients who managed to recover suffered from klasomania - uncontrollable bouts of screaming, barking, muttering, loud singing.

They said that the state of numbness was like the pressure of some force that did not allow them to move a single muscle. It's hard to imagine what it's like to become a prisoner in your own body. At the same time, there were no deviations in the physical condition of the patients.

Some of the unfortunate victims of the disease died during an acute condition, unable to wake up. But there was a downside to lethargic encephalitis. Some sick people, on the contrary, could not fall asleep in any way. Two weeks later, insomnia, which drove people to madness, inevitably led to death.

Presumably, Adolf Hitler was ill with encephalitis lethargica. It is known that he suffered from tremors similar to the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Some researchers believe that trembling in the hands is the most harmless consequence of his illness, and brain disorders influenced his decisions in the future.

What else did the scientists find out? Unfortunately, not much. Autopsy of patients showed damage to the gray matter, basal ganglia and brain stem. Most likely, lethargic encephalitis is a virus.

The disease is transmitted from person to person by airborne droplets. The patient in the acute phase is isolated, drugs are used that are used in Parkinson's disease.

There have been no reports of outbreaks of lethargic encephalitis for decades. The last known case of sleeping sickness, which allegedly occurred in Kazakhstan in 2014, has not been confirmed. In the village of Kalachi, about 130 out of 500 residents began to suddenly fall asleep for days and even weeks. True, then they woke up as if nothing had happened.

It turned out that the uranium mines that worked during the Soviet era, located just a few kilometers from the village, became a source of carbon monoxide, from which local residents were put to sleep.

There are not many references to sleeping sickness in modern culture. The brightest of these is the film Awakenings, in which Robert De Niro masterfully embodied the image of a frozen man, and Robin Williams - a shy doctor and scientist looking for ways to return his patients to a healthy life.
