Acrylic bathroom liner. Acrylic liner for the restoration of a cast-iron bath: how much does it cost, where to buy, how to install? Fitting a bath liner

04.11.2019 Warm floor

Replacing a bathtub, especially a cast-iron bathtub, is a labor-intensive and expensive process by financial standards. Firstly, the weight of this material is very large, the mass of one such bathtub can exceed one hundred kilograms, so it will be physically very difficult to dismantle it, and secondly, this process is also accompanied by a violation of the laying of decorative tiles, which is also undesirable and leads to even more expense item. But this process has an alternative - the restoration of plumbing. The most optimal and common way is to repair a cast-iron bathtub with acrylic. There are two main ways to upgrade a bathtub with acrylic: liner in a cast iron bathtub and covering a cast iron bathtub with acrylic.

Ways to restore the bath with acrylic

It is necessary to dwell in more detail on each of the methods of restoration of plumbing.

Mounting the acrylic liner

An acrylic liner is a plastic overlay on a cast-iron bathtub, which has a wall thickness of four to six, at the bottom - one to two millimeters.

Benefits of installing an insert:

  • you can cover a cast-iron bathtub with acrylic very quickly;
  • the cost of restoring the product is much less in comparison with the dismantling of the bath and the purchase of new plumbing equipment;
  • acrylic overlay on a cast-iron bath does not darken, it washes well, retains heat well;
  • The tub lining is not corrosive.

However, the reviews of people who encountered some problems during the installation of equipment give a number of arguments against this method of restoring plumbing:

  • the liner is almost impossible to install by yourself;
  • the acrylic insert in the cast-iron bath is quickly scratched;
  • it is possible to wash the acrylic liner in a cast-iron bath only with special non-aggressive means;
  • the insert reduces the internal volume of the product, which makes it inconvenient to use.

As you can see, this method of restoration has both its fans and opponents. Therefore, it is worthwhile to understand in more detail the process of installing this equipment.

An acrylic liner in a cast-iron bathroom is mounted as follows:

  1. You can insert an acrylic bath into a cast-iron bath only after making the insert according to individual sizes;
  2. After that, the finished acrylic overlay is installed in the bath on the adhesive composition;
  3. If necessary, the liner is cut in accordance with the level of the tiles adjacent to the bath;
  4. The drain holes of the acrylic lining and the sanitary ware are joined, after which they are fastened with a special adhesive solution;
  5. At the final stage of installation, the drain system is connected to the sewer system, after which the joints of the acrylic lining with the tile are poured with silicone for sealing.

Important! All work on the installation of this equipment should be done by knowledgeable people, otherwise the service life of the bath may not meet your expectations, because any violations of the technology can lead to cracks in the liner and the development of fungus.

The installation process itself takes three hours on the strength, after which the bath is filled with cold water and left in this form for a day. After that, you can safely use the bath for its intended purpose.

How to update a cast-iron bathtub with liquid acrylic?

Filling a cast-iron bathtub with acrylic is an alternative quick way to restore plumbing fixtures. This method is used not only to restore bathtubs, but also to paint enameled washbasins and other plumbing fixtures.

Advantages of liquid acrylic bath restoration technology:

  • lower thermal conductivity, due to which the water in the bath cools more slowly;
  • acrylic coating for a cast-iron bath is smooth, and therefore does not have a yellow coating even with prolonged use of plumbing;
  • high strength and durability of acrylic coating;
  • covering cast-iron bathtubs with acrylic does not imply further special care for plumbing;

But this method of restoring the bathtub coating involves the ideal implementation of all stages of work, otherwise, it may turn out that:

  • the bathtub coating is cracking;
  • restoration of a cast-iron bathtub with liquid acrylic was unsuccessful due to the appearance of swellings and stripes on the surface;
  • there was a peeling of the coating from the walls of the product.

Therefore, you should immediately pay attention to the fact that the restoration of a cast-iron bathtub with liquid acrylic is a very laborious and responsible process.

Before repairing cast-iron bathtubs with liquid acrylic, you need to clean the surface of the plumbing:

  1. With the help of a grinder and a metal nozzle, the old layer of enamel is removed from the sanitary ware;
  2. After that, you need to degrease the entire inner surface of the plumbing with a rag soaked in acetone;
  3. The joints of the bath with tiles should be glued with masking tape so as not to stain their surface.

Repairing cast iron bathtubs with acrylic involves strict adherence to all technologies, which in the future will ensure a long service life of plumbing. It should be noted that the exposure time of liquid acrylic with a hardener depends not only on the manufacturer, but also on the temperature in the room. If the temperature fluctuates between fifteen and twenty degrees, the exposure will be about twenty minutes, with an increase in temperature, the exposure time will decrease.

In order to answer the question of how to update a cast-iron bathtub with acrylic, you need to master the bulk method of restoring sanitary surfaces. It involves the implementation of several successive stages of work:

  1. Using a convenient container (a cut-off bottle of hardener), apply acrylic evenly to the sides of the product;
  2. If the liquid composition is unevenly distributed along the walls of the bath, you need to use a soft rubber spatula, with which it is necessary to coat the necessary places with acrylic;
  3. If bubbles form on the surface, use a brush to remove them;
  4. After completely filling the bath with acrylic, you need to wait for the material to harden for 48 hours.

Conclusion

The described methods of plumbing restoration are financially available, but the installation of an acrylic liner is almost impossible without the participation of professionals. If you want to make repairs yourself, it is better to use the second method of restoring plumbing equipment. In any case, both methods will be financially much more profitable compared to buying new plumbing of dubious quality.

What is an acrylic insert

Acrylic bathroom liners are molded products of a certain size, made of two-layer sanitary acrylic reinforced with fiberglass. Their shapes and dimensions correspond to bathtubs of Soviet and Russian production. These auxiliary plumbing products are light, durable, practical.

Acrylic, which is the main component of the inserts, is a polymer polymethyl methacrylate. According to technical characteristics, it is two times lighter than ordinary silicate glass. Therefore, it is widely used for the production of composite glass for aircraft construction.

According to its metabolism, this material is close to the human body, so it is used in the manufacture of dentures. Thanks to the combination of these factors of acrylic, a person, lying down in an acrylic bath, experiences a comfortable feeling.

Today, for the production of acrylic liners in the bathroom, biocidal additives are added to their base polymer material, which prevent the growth of bacteria and pathogens.

It is this sanitary acrylic that is the top layer of the liner. For its structural reinforcement in bending, the bottom layer is represented by elastic acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic.

The optimal thickness of the acrylic liner, which ensures its normal long-term operation, is 6 millimeters.

Where to start

Before you choose the right acrylic bathroom liner, you need to know the size and type of the main cast iron product. Old Soviet-made steel and cast-iron bathtubs were produced in accordance with the standards and requirements of GOST. Therefore, the elements of the acrylic coating are made according to the same standard sizes. Basically, these are bathtubs with sides, made of a straight or elliptical shape, from 1.5 to 1.7 meters long.

In addition to the length and type of bath, you need to know it:

  • Width along the upper inner part on both sides;
  • The length of the inner part;
  • The total outer width from the line of the extreme sides;
  • Depth in the drain area.

For ellipsoid-shaped bathrooms, you additionally need to know two more upper width dimensions, excluding the sides:

  1. At the head.
  2. Above the plum.

Preparation of the base for the installation of acrylic coating

Preparatory work before the start of the main installation of the liner must be carried out in the following sequence.

  1. Initially, you need to remove tiles, plastic panels or other finishing material in the area where the bathtub and the wall adjoin, and clean all this working space from debris.
  2. The inner surface of the bath must be cleaned with a coarse-grained abrasive material or a grinder to roughen the old enamel. This is necessary to improve the adhesion of the mounting foam to the surface of the old bath.
  3. Then it is necessary to dismantle the drain hole of the bathroom and proceed to the siphon.
  4. The crosspiece adjacent to it must be carefully removed without knocking it out.
  5. Next, the overflow channel is released and the main nut is removed.
  6. Here, at the place of overflow, it is necessary to pay attention to the type of thread, in order to then correctly install the adapter and the new nut.
  7. The final operation after cleaning the bathroom is to prepare the field of action for work. Its inner surface must be thoroughly cleaned of debris, dust and degreased with acetone, white spirit or alcohol.

Mounting the liner

The bathroom liner must be installed with particular attention to the fitting process.

  1. Start this operation from the edges. The coating placed in the bath bowl is outlined around the perimeter with a marker or pencil. Then the tab is removed, the excess plastic is cut off.
  2. After that, it is necessary to cut out two main holes: overflow and drain. For them, special crowns are used, which, when the acrylic coating is reinstalled, will print the necessary contours on its outer surface.
  3. Marked metas are carefully drilled for future holes, their edges are aligned and cleaned.
  4. After all the adjustments, the final adjustment is carried out and the defects that have arisen are eliminated.
  5. During installation, it must be taken into account that the level of the slope of the bowl to the drain hole must correspond to a ratio of 1.5:3.
  6. Before the final installation, the cleaned surface of the bowl is once again degreased, wiped dry and dried.
  7. When all the preparatory work has been completed, the liner is ready for installation, two-component mounting foam can be applied to the bowl.
  8. First, it is applied continuously around the overflow and drain holes.
  9. Then the foam must be distributed along the bottom of the bowl in strips with an interval of 4-5 centimeters between them.
  10. The sides of the bowl from bottom to top are also processed with foam in the same stripes and distance.
  11. Since the foam tends to harden quickly, its application must be carried out quickly, without delaying.
  12. After treating the bath with foam, an insert is inserted, the drain siphon is quickly assembled, which is additionally sealed with silicone sealant.
  13. After installing the acrylic liner in the bathroom, its bowl is filled with water 3 - 5 cm below the overflow hole. This is done to create a uniform load on the coating, distribute the foam, and harden it within 24 hours until it is ready.

The installed acrylic coating is a complete alternative to the acrylic bath. Due to its structure, it:

  • Made from environmentally friendly material;
  • Does not rust, does not darken, does not turn yellow, does not emit harmful toxic substances;
  • Holds temperature well
  • Light scratches on its surface are easily polished with special pastes;
  • Contaminants on the surface are effortlessly washed off with a soft sponge and laundry soap.

As restrictions, to extend the service life and operation, in such baths it is recommended:

  • Do not bathe cats and dogs;
  • Do not use the plunger if the sewer pipes are clogged, which can lead to depressurization of the drain hole;
  • Do not get carried away with hot water, as acrylic is afraid of boiling water and can be deformed.

Conclusion

Today it is proposed to use new technologies in the restoration of old, but still good-quality Soviet-made bathtubs. The easiest and cheapest way to update them is acrylic liners in the bathroom.

They have excellent design, quality and functional properties similar to modern acrylic bathtubs. Low price, safety for health and the environment make these products the most popular among the average residents of our country.

These liners close the defects of old cast-iron or steel bathtubs in the form of:

  • Skolov;
  • scratches;
  • darkened areas;
  • abrasions;
  • Rusty spots.

Their installation always gives an excellent result, takes a little time, gives the corner of the bathroom a very decent and dignified look. Acrylic liner allows a person to feel in an old bath, as in a new one. At the same time enjoying its smooth surface, pleasant warmth, beautiful appearance.

There are several ways to refurbish an old bathtub. One of them is the insertion of a special acrylic liner. This operation can be entrusted to specialists or take on the job yourself if you have the appropriate skills.

How to start a bathroom renovation

To choose the right acrylic insert for a bathtub, you first need to determine the type of bathtub. To do this, you can call a specialist to take measurements. Some companies provide the opportunity to take measurements on their own with the help of a telephone consultation. The dispatcher will be able to determine the type of bathtub by two or three parameters provided by the customer, since not many standard types of bathtubs are produced in production. If your bathtub was made to order, a good company will be able to offer another option.

Acrylic liner can be installed by yourself. When you get it delivered to your home, prepare the bath for work. Free the sides of the bath from unnecessary items. To securely install the liner in the bath, it must first be tried on. To do this, they insert it into an old bath and check how tightly it fits. If there is a gap between the acrylic sheet and the surface of the bath, it will need to be filled with special bath foam.

It is necessary to turn off the water in order to perform the installation of a drain and overflow from the inside of the liner. If the dimensions of the bathtub and the liner are exactly the same, installation is very simple. It is necessary to lubricate both surfaces with sealant, and then firmly press them together. Sealant must also be lubricated to lubricate the thread area of the overflow and drain.

Bath Liner Fitting

If the liner does not exactly fit, you need to adjust it with foam. To do this, the required amount of foam is applied to the gaps, after which the acrylic product is placed in the old bath and pressed against the side by hand. This operation must be performed no later than five minutes after applying the foam. After that, you need to stand in the bath with your feet, after removing your shoes, and first of all, press down the acrylic in the drain area. Next, gently and smoothly press the bottom of the canvas, while moving in the direction from the drain to the opposite side of the bath. You can gently press down the walls of the acrylic liner with your knees and elbows.

After completing the installation of the drain and overflow, close the drain plug and fill the bathtub with water. Its level should be slightly behind the overflow hole - about two centimeters. Get cold water. The bath should be filled for about six hours, after which the water is drained. You can start using the bathroom in about a day.

Over time, the surface of your bath turned yellow and lost its appearance, and you don’t have the financial means to replace plumbing? Installing an acrylic insert in the bath will be an effective, fast and reliable solution to your problem. The liner is great for most types of bathtubs (steel, cast iron, acrylic). Here you can order an acrylic liner in the bathroom cheaply in Moscow with a length of 1.5m and 1.7m.

Do you want to restore the good old bath to its impeccable look? Give us a call and we will definitely help you!

Bathtub replacement can be attributed to the biggest "repair shocks". Especially in the case when the general repair has already been done. Replacement work will lead to its violation, so the owners will either have to put up with partially broken tiles on the floor and walls, or start a full-fledged renovation of the entire room.

To avoid these difficulties, many people prefer to restore it instead of replacing the old bath. This can be done using special paint, liquid acrylic, but the best way to "breathe new life" into the product is to install an acrylic liner, the features of which we will discuss in this article.

What is an acrylic liner?

Scheme of installation and fastening of the acrylic liner

An acrylic liner is, in fact, a full-fledged acrylic bathtub. The only difference is that it is not installed on the floor, but in an existing bath. This technology is often referred to as "bath to bath", which perfectly reflects the essence of the process.

Advantages and disadvantages

Acrylic liners have many advantages, not only compared with other restoration methods, but also with some new bathtubs.

  1. Ease of installation. This, perhaps, can be considered one of the main advantages. The entire installation process takes only a couple of hours, and the existing repair is practically not disturbed.
  2. The advantages of acrylic combined with the strength of cast iron. As a result of installing an acrylic liner, you will get all the benefits of a full-fledged acrylic bathtub, combined with the strength and reliability of a cast-iron or steel base.
  3. Thermos effect. Considering that the bath after installing the liner will be a three-layer structure (metal base, adhesive foam, acrylic liner), which acts as a kind of thermos, the water in such a bath cools much longer than just in acrylic or metal.
  4. Low cost. Although the cost of the liner itself is comparable to the cost of an inexpensive acrylic bathtub, the work of installing it will cost you much less. And given that as a result you will get a full-fledged acrylic bathtub, superior in quality to cheap counterparts, the savings become obvious.
  5. And, undoubtedly, the main advantage is the ability to perfectly restore even the most “killed” bath.

Acrylic liner "brings back to life" even the oldest bath

But along with a lot of advantages, acrylic liners also have several disadvantages:

  • firstly, acrylic liners do not exist for all types of bathtubs;

There are liners for all "Soviet" bathtub models, with the exception of the so-called "sedentary" ones. But for imported bathtubs, finding a suitable liner can be quite problematic.

  • secondly, if the installation technology is violated, the liner may begin to creak or even break after some time;
  • and finally, this is the most expensive way of restoring an old bathtub that exists today.

Installation technology

The technology for installing an acrylic liner at first glance may seem quite simple. But in case of inaccurate compliance with it, unpleasant consequences are possible. Therefore, if you decide to install an acrylic liner with your own hands, we recommend that you follow the instructions given as much as possible.

Choosing an Acrylic Liner

In order to determine which of the eight existing types of liners is right for you, you need to take a series of measurements.

In order to select the correct insert, it is necessary to take measurements in five places

For high-quality measurements, one tape measure is not enough. You will also need a rail of any non-bending material that is slightly longer than the width of your tub.

Five measurements should be made:

  • the length of the outer side of the bath;
  • the length of the internal space of the bath above the drain;
  • the width of the bathtub above the drain;
  • the width of the bath at the point of narrowing of the sides opposite the drain;
  • height above the drain (this measurement is best done from a rigid rail installed above the drain).

For greater clarity, we have depicted all the places of the necessary measurements in the following figure.

For clarity, we offer you a scheme for measuring the bath

With the help of the received data, you can either choose the insert yourself in the supplier's catalog, or simply provide this information to the representative of the company in which you are going to purchase it.

When buying, be sure to pay attention to the bottom. It should have additional fiberglass reinforcement. If it is not there, then such an insert is very unreliable and you should not buy it.

Necessary tools and materials

In addition to the acrylic liner itself, you will need:

  • two component foam. There are several manufacturers of this product, but we recommend that you use Purfoam-2K foam from the Dutch company Den Braven to install the liner. It has been repeatedly tested and approved by most acrylic liners installers. Use only good quality two-component foam. It does not shrink and re-expand, perfectly "grabs" on enameled surfaces and is highly resistant to mechanical pressure;

Please note that the life of the acrylic liner depends on the quality of the foam by 80%.

Foam Purfoam -2K from the Dutch company Den Braven
  • silicone sealant;
  • new drain-overflow siphon;
  • decorative screen and sides (if required);
  • coarse-grained sandpaper or an abrasive nozzle on a drill;
  • a drill bit with a diameter corresponding to the drain and overflow holes;

The diameter of the crown must match the diameter of the drain-overflow holes
  • electric jigsaw with metal files or a small grinder;
  • chisel or chisel for removing tiles along the edge of the bath (if required);
  • screwdriver, pliers and keys for dismantling and installing the siphon;

It is best to use clamps to fix the liner.
  • clamps for fixing the edge of the bath;
  • construction pencil for marking.

Bath preparation

Before installing the liner, the bath must be prepared.

If tile is laid along the edge of the bath, then it must be knocked down
  1. Completely free the edges of the bath from tiles, decorative sides, hanging shelves, etc.
  2. Dismantle the drain-overflow siphon.
  3. Clean the inside of the tub. Coarse-grained sandpaper wrapped around a small block of wood can be used for this purpose. But it is better to use a special abrasive nozzle for an electric drill.
  4. Thoroughly wash the bathtub, after removing from it the dust and debris formed during cleaning.

Since a new siphon will be installed in the future, when dismantling, you can not really care about the safety of the old one.

Insert preparation

Acrylic liners are covered on the inside with a special protective film. It is not recommended to remove it during the preparatory work.

If one or more sides of the bath are adjacent to the wall, the curving edges of the liner will need to be cut with a jigsaw or grinder.

The edges of the liner, which interfere with its normal fit, are cut with a grinder or a jigsaw

If it is possible to move the bath a little, thereby allowing the liner to “sit down” from all sides, then it is better to do without trimming.

After the liner sits freely in the bath, it is necessary to mark the locations of the holes for draining and overflowing. This can be done in two ways.

  1. If there is access to the holes from the outside of the bath, then you can simply make the appropriate marks with a marker or construction pencil through them.
  2. If there is no access to the holes, then it is necessary to carefully circle their edges with a pencil from the inside of the bath and reinstall the liner into it. The remaining traces will be located exactly in those places where you need to make holes.

Don't try to determine hole locations by measuring. Remember that an error of even a few millimeters will lead to damage to the liner.

According to the finished marks, using a crown of the appropriate diameter, holes are made in the liner for draining and overflowing.

The hole for the drain is best drilled from the inside of the liner

When the bath and liner are ready, you can proceed directly to the installation.

Apply sealant to the edges of the drain and overflow holes, as well as to the places where the liner was cut. The sealant is applied to the tub, not the liner.

Sealant ‘generously’ applied around drain and overflow holes

On the entire inner surface of the tub, apply two-component foam as follows: on the top sides, on the sides from top to bottom, on the bottom of the tub in length. Please note that if the distance between the applied foam strips on the sides of the bathtub can be 10-15 centimeters, then the foam should be laid in a continuous layer on its bottom. Otherwise, even after the foam has expanded a little, voids may form under the liner. This can lead to an unpleasant squeak or even breakage of the product.

The bottom of the tub must be completely covered with foam.

As practice shows, for the normal processing of a standard bathtub, two cylinders of two-component foam are needed. Do not try to save on the material, because the liner will become unusable as a result of the formation of voids and will negate all the costs of restoring the bathtub.

We install the acrylic liner itself on the foam. We do not remove the protective film from the inside yet.

After applying the foam, install the liner no later than 10-15 minutes

Please note that two-component foam cures much faster than ordinary foam, so after applying it, the liner must be installed no later than 10-15 minutes. After that, it is necessary to install a new siphon and fix it in the drain and overflow holes.

The edges of the liner and tub are fixed with clamps. The foam that comes out from under them is first removed with a rag. Be careful not to leave foam on the outside of the liner, as it will be very difficult to remove it without damaging the acrylic coating.

To prevent the clamps from damaging the acrylic coating, under them on the outside of the liner, it is worth placing flat pieces of wood, plastic or acrylic left over from trimming the liner.

The final step is to fill the bathtub with water in order to ensure a uniform load on its entire surface for normal shrinkage of the liner and solidification of the foam.

To ensure uniform pressure on the adhesive foam, the bath is filled with water.

After the foam has completely dried (as practice shows, this takes 24 hours), the water is drained from the bathroom, the protective film is removed and the decorative screen and sides are installed.

Acrylic linings, narrow tiles or special corners for self-adhesive bathtubs can be used as sides. Whatever type of sides you choose, it is worth carefully sealing the joints between the wall and the bathroom with sealant before installing them.

Acrylic Care

In conclusion, let's say a few words about the care of the acrylic liner.

Since acrylic is a non-porous material, you can use almost any product to wash it, for example, the one you use to wash dishes. The only thing is that in no case should you wash the bath with metal washcloths or brushes, since they are quite likely to leave marks on acrylic.

Also, in order to avoid scratches, it is not recommended to bathe large pets in an acrylic bath without a special rug.

But if damage still appears, you can get rid of them with the help of liquid acrylic, which you can easily find in any modern building supermarket.

With the help of liquid acrylic and a specially polished mixture, chips and cracks in the acrylic bath can be repaired without leaving a trace.

Installing an acrylic liner (video)

As you can see, installing an acrylic liner is not a particularly difficult task. The main thing is to use only high-quality materials and strictly follow the installation recommendations. And in this case, we are sure that your old bathtub will really get a “new life” and will serve you for many more years. Good luck with your repair!
