With this review, I want to start a cycle of testing various devices for coffee machines that can expand the functionality of even a budget model, endowing it with the abilities of premium coffee machines. The first such device is next in line - the system for connecting coffee machines to the Aqualey water supply. It is produced by a company from St. Petersburg (import substitution on the march!), Which kindly provided me with a sample for testing.
To begin with, connecting to the water supply is the prerogative of either commercial models (for example, or), or very expensive and rare home ones (usually this is typical). Russian reality, of course, makes adjustments. This is in the homeland of most coffee machines - in Italy - almost San Pellegrino flows from the tap, but in our country it is better to connect to the water supply after a household filter under the sink or directly to the cooler.
But if you want to teach your inexpensive type of coffee machine to fill with water on its own, then there is nothing impossible. Here is such a simple set that contains everything you need to connect almost any model (with the exception of some instances with closed access to the tank) to a household filter and make it almost autonomous:
The principle, of course, cannot be called innovative - any person with an engineering education, given the time, can assemble a similar eyeliner by selecting the necessary spare parts. In the case of Aqualey, the manufacturer has already done this for you by developing a universal kit for most coffee machines.
Aqualey is essentially a system of fittings and tubes that can be neatly routed from under-sink filters to your coffee machine. Plus, the main element and “know-how” is a float valve with a mount that regulates turning the water supply on and off. Optionally, an additional tap is installed to turn off the water supply for a long absence or in case of cleaning the coffee machine for greater peace of mind. Also included are stickers to make mounting easier:
All materials are carefully selected, the manufacturer assures (and this is confirmed by the marking on the spare parts) that the fittings - pipes, faucet and fittings (adapters) - are made by the British company John Guest in the UK.
However, enough to consider, let's collect. I connected Melitta Caffeo Varianza to the water supply and this is what it looked like:
I start with the help of fittings and a knife to assemble the tube configuration I need. This step requires attention! First I try everything. Before starting the process, I recommend straightening all segments of the tubes (since they come in a twisted form, they have a slight curvature when unpacking). At the first stage, I try it on without cutting it under the complete faucet (with a blue valve). At the last stage, I will simply insert it into the appropriate segment, accurately understanding the future wiring from the machine under the countertop and further to the filter under the sink.
At this moment, I decide to slightly change the location of the coffee machine on the table and hang Aqualey on the back wall of the tank. In addition, after carefully reading the instructions again, I conclude that I initially forgot to cut a corner at the round white sticker to fix the fasteners, and glued it strictly opposite the long white bolt. In fact, you need to make a small corner cutout and stick the resulting semicircle “above” the bolt. In this case, the sticker acts as a spacer between the inlet pipe and the mounting bolt (see photo below):
Now I finally fix the mount on the tank wall. For better vertical fixation, as indicated in the instructions, I made a cut-out corner in the sticker and placed it in the girth of the bolt.
I bring the Aqualey hose under the countertop to the filter. I carefully cut the blue hose that went from the filter to the faucet at the sink and connect all three connections in a complete tee.
This is what the mounted Aqualey system looks like in my case. The tap that shuts off the water supply to the coffee machine, I decided to place it on the side so that it was at hand and there was no need to climb under the sink. But, in principle, you can choose any other place for its tie-in.
Now the coffee machine can be pushed deeper under the wall cabinet - there is no more need to get the water tank. You just need to leave enough space to make it convenient to fill the grain.
Nuances
Like any potential client, I am primarily concerned about two questions - how reliable is the Aqualey system ( in other words, will the float “turn off” and flood my entire kitchen?) and how the warranty repair departments look at the use of such a system ( Will they refuse to fix my coffee grinder, for example, if I use Aqualey?). Let's take it in order:
- Reliability and leakage protection. Here I must admit that I didn’t do a long test, but honestly for a couple of days I tried to get the float valve to “stuck”: turn it this way and that, turn off and turn on the water, use warm water, turn on the coffee machine so that it vibrated… But the valve stubbornly worked at the right moment. In general, the design looks quite reliable in new condition. There are no complaints about the tubes and connections themselves - they really inspire confidence, although I am not a plumber.
However, when using the Aqualey system in the office, for peace of mind, I myself would turn off the water supply to the coffee machine with a special tap for the night. Again, it's included.
2. Regarding the warranty, then after interviewing several service centers, I came to the conclusion that they do not have a unified position on the issue of whether a coffee machine upgraded in this way is guaranteed or not. Definitely connecting Aqualey to the coffee machine by tie-in may be a reason for denial of warranty (but may not be). But the supply of water directly from above into the tank can hardly affect the warranty repair. After all, the service center simply will not know that you connected their coffee machine to the water supply, there will be no traces other than a couple of stickers on the machine.
3. Plus of course compatibility issue. The system is simply implemented in coffee machines with top access to the water tank. Moreover, since the diameter of the tube and the dimensions of the other elements are relatively small, the aesthetic appearance suffers little, the system looks quite solid. But if the water tank extends from the front or side, then you will need a tie-in. This involves drilling a small hole with a diameter of 7-8 mm in the body of the coffee machine and the tank itself. The manufacturer showed me several examples of such an implementation, below are a couple of photos. The exact information on whether Aqualey is suitable specifically for your model can be found on the manufacturer's website or on the hotline. The manufacturer also promises to help with all installation questions in your case.

But personally, I can’t say that I would immediately decide on a mortise installation. Still, the hull is damaged.
Review verdict on the Aqualey system
Without concealing the fact that this review is being printed, as they say, “as an advertisement,” I hasten to assure you that I took the product for a test with the condition “if you don’t like it, I won’t do a review.” Well, as you can see, I completely overcame my skepticism 🙂
By the way, at first it seemed to me that such a device for connecting coffee machines to the water supply would be relevant only in offices. However, after interviewing a dozen friends, it turned out that many of them are ready to consider this system specifically for home use. My guess was confirmed by the manufacturer Aqualea, who claims that more than 50% of orders are for home connections.
After all, in addition to the main functionality - automatic tank replenishment - Aqualey can significantly reduce the space occupied by a coffee machine, which is important just in home kitchens.
On the one hand, if the tank gets from above, then this requires space above the coffee machine. When installing Aqualey, there is no need for it. But not quite, the grains must be covered.
A feint in another. By using the system, you get rid of the volume of the water tank. That is, even if there are 10 consumers, you do not need to take a coffee machine with a large water tank and you can limit yourself to at least a liter! And finally, the financial aspect - many are considering buying built-in coffee machines just because of their autonomy.
