Soft roof with insulation installation technology. How to lay soft tiles. Tools and materials for work

01.11.2019 Heating

A soft tile roof allows you to realize the most incredible architectural ideas, since such a roof can take on almost any shape. Soft roofs can be laid on slopes with angles from 12 to 90 degrees. The distinguishing features of the material include light weight, good insulating performance, durability and a wide selection of shades and textures. Covering the roof with soft tiles is carried out in several stages.

How to cover the roof with a soft roof - preparing the base

Before starting installation work, it is necessary to properly prepare the base for soft tiles.

It must meet the following requirements:

Preparing the roof for a soft roof - ventilation device

Ventilation is a prerequisite for a high-quality and durable roof of soft roof houses.

The ventilation system is necessary for:

  • removal of excess moisture from the crate, roofing material and insulation;
  • ventilation of the building;
  • reducing the temperature of the structure and under-roof space in the summer;
  • preventing ice build-up on the roof.

To fully fulfill the above tasks, ventilation must have a fairly large gap (at least 5 cm). The exhaust hole on the roof is placed as high as possible, preferably on a ridge. The supply hole is placed at the eaves.

Roof with soft roof - underlayment construction

A reinforcing layer is almost always laid under the soft roof covering. If the slope of the roof is less than 1: 3, then, according to the existing technology for the installation of soft roofs, it is necessary to cover the entire area of the slope with a lining layer. If the roof has large slope angles, then the lining layer is installed on the end parts, cornice overhangs, skates and in valleys.

The material is laid in layers with an overlap of 100 mm. The lining layer is attached to the base of the roof with nails, in increments of 20 mm. All joints must be sealed with bituminous mastic.

How to cover the roof with a soft roof - protecting the eaves

Before installation, the protective film is removed from the tiles. Then each element is glued to the base and additionally fixed with 4 nails at the perforation points. The next rows are laid with the ends of the tongues at the level of the cutout of the previous row of tiles. In the valleys and at the ends, the tiles are cut along the edge and covered with bituminous mastic or K-36 glue.

Soft roof (bituminous tiles) - today is one of the most popular materials for arranging pitched roofs of various types and configurations. Among the advantages of soft tiles are:

  • light weight - minimal load on the roof structure and the building as a whole;
  • tightness - reliable protection of the under-roof space, walls and foundation of the building from moisture and winds;
  • good soundproofing characteristics - even heavy rain or hail on a soft roof will not drum, but rustle quietly;
  • attractive appearance - a roof made of soft tiles looks status and expensive, no worse than natural metal tiles;
  • long service life - about 30 years, of course, with timely preventive maintenance and current repairs;
  • ease of installation and maintenance - a do-it-yourself soft roof is equipped in a matter of days, and one person will be able to cope with all stages of work.

Photo soft roof: a few good examples

What is a soft roof?

Soft roofing is a material consisting of a fiberglass base and rubber-bitumen impregnation, which is carried out on both sides. It is through the use of rubber bitumen that soft tiles acquire such properties as moisture resistance and tightness. A special dressing is responsible for the wear resistance of this roofing material, which, moreover, prevents individual plates from sticking together during storage and transportation.

Let's watch a video on how shingles are produced at the factory:

Soft roofing can be laid with your own hands only on those pitched roofs, the angle of inclination of which exceeds 11 °. The maximum level of the roof slope is not limited.

What tools and fixtures are required for the installation of a soft roof?

As already mentioned, it is quite possible to cope with the laying of soft shingles alone. Your arsenal should include:

    1. the tile itself;
    2. mastic for its gluing and trowel;
    3. sealant for finishing seams and areas where roofing adjoins walls, pipes and other structural elements of the roof;
    4. hammer and roofing nails;
    5. strips for decorating cornices and ends;
    6. construction plumb line and pencil;
    7. waterproofing membrane;
    8. gloves.

This video shows a more accurate set of tools for installing a soft roof with your own hands:

Preparation of the roof structure for laying soft tiles

The main difference between bituminous tiles and other types of roofing materials is that the soft roof is mounted only on a solid solid base. A metal tile, for example, is laid on a crate made of wooden beams. At the same time, the gap between the bars in no way harms the roofing.

Important! Bituminous tiles do not have such a rigid structure as metal tiles or slate, so they are mounted on OSB (oriented strand boards), edged or tongue-and-groove boards, moisture-resistant plywood no thinner than 9 mm.

If you chose a board as the basis for a soft roof, then experts advise buying it in winter and using it in summer. The time during which the board lies in the stack will only benefit it, since the moisture level of the wood will balance (ideally - 20%). The optimal board width is about 100 mm. It is very good if all the boards are the same, for example, sawn with a band saw.

Video instruction for preparing the base for a soft roof:

If you are planning to organize a warm attic, then the roofing “pie” should have, in addition to a rigid base and the shingles itself, other layers (in order from inside to outside):

  • waterproofing membrane laid over the rafters;
  • heat-insulating layer, for example, mineral or basalt wool;
  • vapor barrier;
  • crate for fixing the base of the soft roof.

What areas of the roof require special attention?

Before the soft roof is laid and fixed on the roof with your own hands, it is necessary to carry out work to strengthen a number of sections:

  • Installation of a roofing carpet, which is a non-woven fabric with bituminous impregnation and special dressing, on cornice overhangs, roof ends, on valleys. The roofing carpet is usually purchased in the same color as the shingles. The canvas is glued in the direction from the bottom up and with an overlap of 150 mm horizontally, 100 mm vertically, smearing the joints of the carpet with mastic. On both sides of the valley there should be 500 mm of lining, and on the ridge - 250 mm each. The ends and cornice overhangs are finished with a roofing carpet to a width of 400 mm. The canvas is fixed with roofing nails in increments of 200 mm.

  • Installation of metal cornice strips on top of the roofing carpet on the cornice overhangs.
  • Fastening gable strips in the ends of the roof.

Mandatory conditions for the installation of a soft roof

  1. Soft roofing is mounted by hand or with the involvement of professionals, but the surface must always be dry and clean. This means that installation work can only be carried out in warm weather. The lower temperature limit is plus 5°С. If, however, there is a need for laying bituminous tiles in winter, in frost, it is recommended to use a hot-air burner, as well as pre-hold the roofing material for several hours at room temperature.
  2. Why does a freshly laid soft roof need heat? In addition to the fact that the shingle - a sheet of 3-4 "tiles" - is attached to the base with nails, it has a self-adhesive bituminous backing on the inside. Under the influence of solar heat, sheets of soft tiles are soldered together, and also glued to the base of the roof. If it is cold outside, this does not happen, which means that the tightness of the roofing carpet cannot be guaranteed.
  3. The soft roof during installation must be taken from several packages at the same time. This technique is useful because different batches of the same type of shingle may have slightly different shades. By combining them, you will get the original roof, and also make it easier for yourself to find sheets of the right color in case of repair of the roof covering.

Roof ventilation equipment

Do-it-yourself soft roof- This is a process that consists of several stages, the first of which is the organization of a ventilation system. An unventilated roof is a direct path to the rapid destruction of rafters under the influence of rot, as well as the transformation of condensate that accumulates on the roof into frost and icicles at sub-zero temperatures.

This is how the ventilation scheme of a soft roof looks like

Ventilation outlets and air vents located under the cornice, as well as the gap between the base of the soft roof and the tile itself - all this ensures air circulation in the under-roof space, and hence the timely removal of vapors.

Mastic for soft roofing

In addition to roofing nails, in the process of installing soft tiles, such a method of fastening as mastics is also involved. They are made from bitumen. The highest quality mastics contain polymers.

Important! The use of mastic increases such a characteristic of a soft roof as elasticity, which means that the likelihood of deformation of the roofing carpet during operation decreases, in particular, due to sudden changes in temperature.

The video shows several examples of the use of mastic for the repair and installation of a soft roof:

Mastics are cold and hot. Cold mastics connect sheets of soft tiles from the inside, and hot ones seal the roof from the outside. In addition to the bituminous base, the mastic usually also contains a filler: it can be ash, gypsum, lime or polymer fiber.

Is it necessary to buy ready-made mastic? Video of making a primer for shingles

Mastic for mounting soft tiles can be done independently. You will need two separate containers. Place 2 portions of bitumen in one, and 2 portions of diesel fuel and a portion of filler in the other. Warm up the containers at the same time.

Important! The bitumen must be heated to 180° until all the water has evaporated. After that, mix the contents of the two containers, and get a cold mastic.

Here is a detailed video on how to make mastic for a soft roof at home:

Hot mastic is prepared differently. Bitumen is heated in the boiler to 200°C, and then the filler is gradually introduced. Make sure that the temperature does not fall below 160°. When the mastic is ready, its quality is checked in 2 stages:

  • apply a little mastic to the surface at a 45° angle. The mixture should not drain;
  • wait for the mastic to harden. In a qualitative composition, cracks do not form.

Bituminous tiles. Video instruction from professionals

The first stage is the processing of the wooden base of the roof with a composition containing bitumen and diesel fuel. Next, the surface is coated with mastic, on top of which glassine and roofing material are laid. Sheets of soft tiles begin to be laid from the center of the roof slope to the right and left, forming rows from the eaves to the ridge. So, your scheme: from the center - to the sides, from the bottom - up. Previously, on each sheet, a film is removed that protects the self-adhesive bituminous substrate. Next, the tiles are nailed to the base with 4-6 nails.

Another important rule: soft roof sheets in different rows should be spaced apart, that is, their joints should be displaced. This is necessary to improve the moisture-proof properties of the roof. In addition, it is necessary to observe the overlap of each subsequent layer on the previous one by 7-10 cm. Along the edges of the roof and at the joints of the coating with pipes and other communications, figured trimming of the tiles is carried out. Its edges are carefully glued with mastic.

Features of the installation of a soft roof in the area of \u200b\u200bvent pipes and chimneys

A bituminous shingle roofing around pipes, antennas and other utilities is quite easy to install if you mark and plan everything in advance, as well as purchase special passage elements. The joints of the base of the roof and pipes are reinforced with a roofing substrate, which was already mentioned above, and then coated with mastic. Tiles are laid on top of the mastic, and then those same passage elements.

Useful advice: to be sure, treat the junction of the passage element and the tile with sealant.

This video details how to bypass chimneys and other roof elements:

When the soft roof is laid to the very top of the roof slope, use special ridge elements that cover the upper parts of both slopes, glue to the mastic and nail.

How are ongoing repairs carried out?

How often you need to repair bituminous shingles depends on the choice of roofing substrate: wood, cement, concrete screed, etc. Repair can be reduced to sealing cracks that have appeared in the coating or to the complete replacement of individual sheets of tiles.

In any case, before starting work, it is necessary to clean the damaged area. It will be easy if you have to remove the entire sheet. If a crack is to be repaired, use anthracene or diesel oil and a rag/hard brush to remove the grit from the shingles.

If the flaw is so serious that not only the tile itself is broken, but also the substrate, a filler mixture containing mastic and sand / sawdust is first prepared. With this composition, the defect is puttied and only then a patch is applied. Please note that in all cases, the mastic must extend beyond the perimeter of the patch by at least 200 mm.

If a bubble with water has formed under the roofing carpet, it is cut, the location of the leak is determined, the waterproofing is restored, and then they act according to the already described scheme.

Upon completion of the repair work, it is necessary to reapply the dressing to the cleaned area. Usually, sand is used for this, which is laid on the mastic that has not yet hardened. If you neglect this step, the mastic can dry out under the influence of sunlight and crack quickly.

This video demonstrates the repair of a soft roof near the vent:

So, a soft roof made of bituminous tiles is an easy-to-work and durable material, which is also inexpensive. If you strictly follow the technology of laying a soft roof and purchase high-quality tiles, mastic and other fittings, your roof will look attractive for a long time and reliably protect the house from wind, moisture and drafts.

Lathing installation: we equip a reliable base for different types of roofing

The service life of any roof depends on how well it is arranged, and the installation of a soft roof is no exception to this rule. There are many types of such coatings, but they all require the use of a solid foundation. Before proceeding with the work, it is necessary to analyze the conditions in which the installation of a roof made of soft tiles will take place. The lower limit of the temperature range is +5C, since lower temperatures are no longer suitable for work. The fact is that the fastening of the coating sheet (shingle) occurs with the help of nails and a self-adhesive layer applied on the back of the shingle.

This method of installation is the simplest and most reliable solution, but its disadvantage is that one of the elements of the technology is the sun's rays, gluing individual sheets into a monolithic carpet, making the roof airtight.

It is worth saying that even in frost, do-it-yourself installation of a soft roof can be done. For example, through the use of a kind of greenhouse mounted above the target section of the roof. The technology in this case is the same as in the usual case, since the temperature inside the volume limited by the film is maintained through the use of heat guns.

Roof structure - picture

In the general case, speaking of the base, they mean the truss system. After its installation, the vapor barrier is installed. As a rule, this is a special film, with which the roof structure is fitted from the inside. It is fixed with wooden planks, which can be used to fasten the inner lining of the attic.

Before covering the roof with soft tiles, heat-insulating material is also laid, it must be between the vapor barrier and the base of the tile.

For the installation of a soft roof, any material that "makes friends" with nails, and also has a flat and smooth surface, can be used. Another requirement is the ability of the material to withstand the considerable weight of such a roof. An OSB board (OSB), as well as a tongue-and-groove or edged board or moisture-resistant plywood, is suitable for the role of the base.

The cost of installing a soft roof also depends on what plays the role of the foundation. However, regardless of the type of material used, the possibility of thermal expansion must be taken into account, therefore, in any case, appropriate clearances must be left.

Creating a ventilation gap

The presence of an air gap allows you to solve problems such as adjusting the moisture content of the insulation and the material of the crate, and also reduces the amount of ice that forms on the roof in winter. The attractiveness of this element is also in the fact that in summer it provides a decrease in temperature inside the roofing cake.

When do-it-yourself soft roofing is done , then you need to ensure that the width of the air gap is at least 5 cm. The holes for the inflow of fresh air are best located at the bottom of the roof, and the hood at the top.

Creating an underlay

Lining is a special material that is laid over the entire area of the roof. Its installation starts from the bottom-up from the edge of the cornice overhang. The rolls are unfolded with an overlap of more than 10 cm, and for fixing every 20 cm, they are fixed with nails.

In the event that the roof slope is large (at least 18 degrees), it is allowed to lay insulation only along the ridge and along the eaves, as well as where chimneys are located or adjoining a vertical wall.

Installing slats

The installation technology of a soft roof involves the use of eaves and gable strips, which are designed to protect the crate from rain moisture. The first of them are mounted on cornice overhangs directly on top of the lining. Such elements are also called drips. Planks of this type are laid with an overlap of more than 2 cm, and fastening is carried out using roofing nails arranged in a zigzag pattern along the installation line.

Gable strips are mounted on the end parts of the roof, with an overlap of at least two centimeters. Both types of products are fixed with nails located at a distance of 10 cm along the laying line.

After the installation of the planks, the valley carpet is laid, which makes it possible to increase the water resistance. Its color is chosen to match the color of the tiles, and the edges are fixed with nails spaced 100 mm apart. After completion of this stage, a soft roof can be laid katepal - its installation begins with cornice tiles.

Cornice tiles

Cornice tiles - photo

It is laid on top of the fixed planks on the cornice overhang. For its fastening, galvanized nails are used, driven into the base material at a distance of 25 mm from the edge of the material. Another option is also possible, which is also suitable if a soft roof is made by hand. We are talking about a pattern from an ordinary tile. Making it is very simple: you need to take a shingle and cut off the petals from it. In this case, the installation of tiles goes “joint”, and the indentation from the cornice overhang should be more than 2 cm.

Laying ordinary tiles

The first thing to note is the possibility of various color deviations, since the tone may vary slightly in different packages. To avoid this, you need to mix 5-6 packs.

Do-it-yourself installation of a soft roof starts from the middle of the cornice overhang and is carried out in both directions.

The protective film from the shingles must be peeled off right before installation, since sheets without it are no longer recommended to be stacked in packs.

The shingles are fastened with nails. As a rule, only 4 nails driven in above the tile groove are enough, but for a slope of 45 degrees (and above), it is better to use 6 nails.

Laying ordinary tiles - picture

The very first row of tiles is positioned so that the lower edge of the material is only 10-15 mm from the lower edge of the tiles located along the cornice overhang.

The “petals” of the shingle should cover the joints of the cornice tiles. Do-it-yourself soft tiles are mounted so that the "petals" of the next row with their tip are at or above the cutouts of the previous layer.

At the ends, the material must be cut along the edge of the roof, and also reinforced by gluing. The minimum width of the interlayer should be 10 cm. The situation is similar in the valleys, where the tiles must be cut to get an open strip 15 cm wide. In this case, the edges of the material are also smeared with special glue by 10 cm.

When cutting shingles, it is better to use a small piece of plywood that allows you to cut the material without fear of damaging the layer below.

Installation of ridge tiles

To perform work with the roof ridge, you will need to prepare a scaffold. They greatly simplify the work, but after dismantling them, you must not forget to glue the petals at the attachment points.

Do-it-yourself installation of a soft roof in this case is carried out with an overlap of 5 cm, and four nails are fixed. The laying of the ridge layer can be started only after the installation of ordinary tiles is completed.

Ridge tiles are obtained by dividing the eaves at the places of perforation. After that, each element is bent in half and mounted with the short side along the roof ridge.

Roof connections

Passages through the roof can be organized in different ways. In the event that their diameter is small, it is recommended to use special rubber seals. This applies to antenna inputs and other types of communications, but pipes are insulated differently. Here, the possible heating of the pipe is taken into account, due to which a slightly different technology is used.

First of all, a triangular rail is nailed along the perimeter of the place of contact between the pipe and the base of the roof. The most common option is 50x50 mm. The next step is the installation of the lining carpet, the overlaps of which must be smeared with glue. The pipe itself is glued with insulating material so that it covers at least 30 cm of the pipe and 20 cm of the ramp.

When a soft roof is created with your own hands, this stage is often the final one, but one more operation is required - to fix the junction bar around the perimeter of the pipe. A metal apron is fixed over the insulating material, and all seams are sealed with silicone adhesive.

Adjacency to a vertical wall is carried out in a similar way. The only exception is the triangular bar, which does not create a perimeter, but is mounted along the wall.

The main questions discussed in this article will help a layman to quickly understand the course of the matter. Moreover, many difficult points are described here, which a beginner in construction will easily miss. On our website there is also additional information telling what a soft roof is. The technology of editing, video work of professionals and useful tips allows you to understand this difficult issue in the shortest possible time.

Soft tile, also flexible or bituminous, is a roofing material based on fiberglass covered with bitumen and stone powder. The fiberglass base is strength and long service life, bitumen gives it high waterproofing qualities, and stone dressing is a protective layer from sunlight and mechanical stress. The main advantage of bituminous tiles over other roofing materials is its flexible structure, which makes it possible to install on roofs of any configuration and shape without unnecessary undercuts and waste.

Laying technology

Before you cover the roof with a soft roof, you need to understand that this material not only has a flexible structure, it is soft. This means that a very solid foundation must be laid under it. Therefore, first of all, the sheathing for flexible tiles must be solid and made of durable materials. Usually, OSB-3 boards, plywood (moisture resistant), tongue-and-groove boards, or edged boards (with a moisture content of not more than 20%) are used for this.

What is permissible when assembling the lathing under a soft roof:

  • a small gap between the elements within 1–2 cm;
  • plane difference within 2–3 mm.

If OSB or plywood are used as elements of the crate, then they are laid with an offset. That is, the seams between the panels should not match in horizontal rows. The reason for this laying is to create a plane that will evenly distribute loads over its entire surface. It should look like this:

Preparing for installation

Before you cover the roof with shingles, you need to prepare everything you need, except for the roofing material itself. From the tools you need to prepare:

  • a hammer;
  • scissors or knife;
  • pencil and tape measure;
  • putty knife.

From additional products:

  • special nails for fastening;
  • bituminous mastic for connecting shingles to each other;
  • metal strips: cornice and end.

Assembly operations

The very first installation operation is laying the lining layer. This is a roll material with a width of 1 m and a length of up to 15 m, which is laid out parallel to the cornice overhang. Its main task is to hide the differences in the plane, plus increase the waterproofing characteristics of the roof as a whole. In its composition, it resembles the soft roof itself, because it is based on fiberglass impregnated with bitumen. This process looks like this:

What you need to pay attention to when laying the underlayment carpet:

  • fastening to the crate is made with nails for bituminous tiles, the installation step of fasteners is 25 cm;
  • adjacent strips are overlapped relative to each other with an offset of 10–15 cm;
  • places of overlap are smeared with bituminous mastic using a spatula, the thickness of the applied mastic is not more than 1 mm.

The second installation operation is the installation and fastening of the cornice strips. They serve to strengthen the roof structure, plus they create conditions for the removal of precipitation in the form of water from the roof plane. They are laid along the cornice with an edge so that the plank covers the two planes of the cornice horizontal and vertical. Fastening is carried out with ordinary roofing nails, which are staggered. The distance between the fasteners is 15 cm. For clarity, we give a photo example of the installation process:

The third operation is the installation and fastening of the end strips. They are mounted on top of the underlayment. Like cornice strips, they are attached to the batten with roofing nails in a checkerboard pattern with a step of 15 cm.

Laying and fastening of a soft roof

All preparatory operations have been completed, it remains to install the shingles themselves. This process is actually simple, but the question of how to do it right is constantly heard today. Therefore, it is very important to perform installation procedures strictly in a certain sequence.

  1. First of all, you need to lay the starting strip. This is not a separate element, it is an ordinary ordinary bituminous tile, from which petals are cut off with their own hands. This requires a ruler and a knife. The resulting strip is laid along the edges of the cornice on the cornice strips with a 1–2 cm indent from the kink. The strip is fastened using bituminous mastic, which is smeared on the back side of the element 10 cm wide and no more than 1 mm thick. Before applying, do not forget to remove the protective film. Additionally, after laying the strips, they are pierced with nails along the outer edge (along the cornice strip) in increments of 25 cm.

Note! Before laying the strips, it is necessary to smear the end strips with mastic so that the material attaches well to them. This is an important point that should not be missed.

  1. Before laying each element of soft tiles, it is necessary to remove the protective polymer film from the back. It must be removed from the inside, pulling towards the location of the petals.

  1. The first bottom row of shingles is laid from any edge of the roof with the end strips laid on the smeared part. The material must be laid strictly parallel to the eaves. Fastening is carried out with nails for flexible tiles in strictly defined places. Here it is necessary to indicate that each manufacturer has its own attachment points. But most often these are the areas between the petals. This is done in order to be able to close the nail attachment points with petals above the shingle. That is, the nail heads remain under the petals and are not adversely affected by natural precipitation.

Note! If the angle of inclination of the roof structure is less than 45°, then four nails are used to fasten the shingles. If the angle exceeds 45°, then six nails are used.

Skate decoration

Correctly covering the roof with soft tiles is not easy to lay roofing material strictly according to technology. This is to create a cover that would cover the entire structure, leaving no gaps and crevices, through which rain, snow and other precipitation can penetrate under the roofing. Therefore, it is very important to close the skate correctly.

To do this, they use the soft roof itself, the shingles of which are cut into pieces, or rather, into petals, making cuts with a knife along the ruler perpendicular to the shingles. That is, elements from the petals of the tile should be obtained. Now about how to properly lay the resulting patterns:

  • they are laid along the ridge along, that is, the petals should “look” along the ridge element;
  • installation is overlapped so that there are no gaps and gaps;
  • overlap is carried out taking into account which side the wind blows more often, that is, the laying of elements must be carried out taking into account the least resistance.

The assembly process itself is carried out according to the following technology:

  1. The protective film is removed from the patterns.
  2. The back side is coated with bituminous mastic.
  3. Installation is being done.
  4. Fastening is carried out with nails - two on each side of the ridge. The nail heads must overlap the next element.

For a better perception, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the photo-instruction for decorating the roof ridge:

To ensure ventilation of the roof, the roof ridge is often not covered with a solid carpet. It is left open, and a special device is installed on top (usually made of plastic in the color of the roofing), similar to a gable roof. Fasten the device with nails or self-tapping screws directly on the laid flexible tiles. In its design there are slots through which air will escape from under the roof structure.

Design of valleys

Before you cover the roof using soft tiles, you need to pay attention to whether there is a valley in its design. This is the part of the roof that is most affected by atmospheric precipitation. It is on it that they flow in large quantities. Therefore, it is reinforced with two layers of metal strips: one from the bottom of the crate, the other from above. The planks are mounted with an overlap with an offset of at least 15 cm.

As for protection, a lining layer is laid on top of the crate and plank. And already on top of it the so-called valley carpet is laid in its entire width (1 m). That is, on each side of the valley, it will cover planes 50 cm wide. Nothing can be cut and saved here. As for the length of the valley, if the length of the lining material is not enough, then it is overlapped with an offset of at least 30 cm.

Attention! The carpet laid on the valley on the lining material should lie down for several hours before the installation of the tile itself begins. During this time, it will straighten up and will definitely take the form of a valley.

The valley carpet is fastened with bituminous mastic and ruff nails every 15 cm along the edges of the laid strip. In principle, the carpet itself is a ready-made coating, sprinkled with stone chips and impregnated with bitumen. It is selected in the color of the roofing material, so that by itself it will not spoil the roof.

The valley carpet does not have to be covered with soft tiles, although fasteners (nail heads) will have to be closed.

Pipe decoration

Chimneys and ventilation pipes are an integral part of roofs. These are serious ledges when the question is how to cover the roof with shingles. Well, if they pass through the skate. But more often they are located on the roof slopes, so when laying soft tiles, you must strictly follow the rules for installing the lining layer using special devices that ensure the tightness of the pipes to the roof plane.

These devices are plastic products in the form of caps with a through hole, the diameter of which is selected to match the diameter of the chimney or ventilation pipe. To install the pipe, you must first mount the cap.

  1. Therefore, a hole is made in the laid lining layer at the place where the pipe passes.
  2. Then, bituminous mastic is applied with a spatula at the place of installation of the cap on the laid lining material.
  3. The cap is laid in place, pressed against the plane of the roof.
  4. Additionally, it is attached to the crate with self-tapping screws or roofing nails along the perimeter, preferably in two lines: along the outer edge and closer to the pipe.

Then one of the shingles, which will rest against the lower part of the cap pipe, must be laid in place and a part of the upper strip cut around the circumference of the pipe. That is, the tile must accurately describe the shape of the pipe so that everything looks beautiful.

The upper surfaces (fields) of the cap are lubricated with mastic. A prepared shingle is laid on it, which, in turn, is, as usual, attached to the roof with nails. In the same way, the shingles are fitted and laid on the sides and top of the cap. It should be noted that it is necessary to coat with mastic. In this case, it performs the functions of not only a bonding material, but also a sealant.

Important! It is recommended to reinforce the junction of the tiles and the plastic cap with a sealant. For this, the same bituminous mastic is used, only not from a can, but from a pistol. It is thicker, and the material is fed from the gun in an even groove. In addition, the applied mastic must be covered with stone chips. Just sprinkle the material with pebbles that can be collected from the softest roof. The stone coating will protect the sealant from the negative effects of the sun.

Generalization on the topic

As practice shows, today more and more often the owners of suburban real estate are trying to do some construction processes with their own hands, saving the family budget. In this regard, it is easiest to cover the roof with flexible tiles. Of course, to cover large roofs, you will have to call in craftsmen, but in order to close the roof of a gazebo or porch, terrace, bathhouse or garage, you can not call specialists.

In this article you will find instructions with step-by-step photos and video tips on how to make a soft roof with your own hands using the example of a roof.

Preparatory stage

Installation of a soft roof begins with the arrangement of a new or repair of an existing crate:

1. After installing the truss system, the inside of the roof is covered with a vapor barrier film, which is overlapped and fixed with bars.

2. Insulation plates are located between the rafters. Their thickness, density and number of layers are determined by the architectural features of the roof and the climate of the region.

3. From the outside, the insulation is closed with a superdiffusion membrane. On top of this layer, bars of the counter-lattice are installed - they are attached along the rafters, create the necessary ventilation gap and form an additional frame for OSB or plywood.

4. Finishing stage - installation of the crate. Its type depends on the slope of the roof. At 9-20 degrees, it is necessary to mount a solid base under a soft roof made of moisture-resistant plywood FSF, OSB-3, DSP, boards. At 20 degrees and above, a sparse base is allowed from a board with a thickness of at least 25 cm or a bar with a thickness of at least 50 cm. The two extreme elements of the crate are mounted with a reduced gap of 30 cm, the rest - with a step of 32 cm.

5. In the case of a continuous crate, another layer of roofing cake appears - rolled bituminous waterproofing is laid over the entire surface.

Important! This manual gives the maximum allowable batten spacing. If possible, it is better to make a more frequent or continuous crate.

Do-it-yourself installation of a soft roof

Before starting installation, be sure to check whether the roof slopes are even. If there are deviations, it is necessary to draw a strictly vertical line - you will be guided by it when centering the sheets.

When carrying out work, do not stretch the sheets by more than 10 mm and follow the instructions with step-by-step photos exactly.

Stage 1

Laying must begin on the side of the roof opposite to the prevailing winds. Mark the overhang of the first row with a stretched rope. The optimal length is 3.5-5 cm. Secure the first strip by driving nails into the top of the wave strictly at an angle of 90 degrees.

Follow a certain order of hammering.

Use a special filler to protect the cornice gaps from birds, snow drifts and debris. If necessary, the holes are easily pressed through with an improvised tool of a suitable diameter.

Stage 2

Lay the second row, starting with half a sheet. At the corner joint there should be 3, not 4 overlaps - otherwise, deformation of the roof is possible. Drive in nails, fixing both sheets at the same time. Install the following blades in the sequence shown in the figure. Make sure the locks match. For marking sheets, you can use an ordinary colored pencil.

Important! Installation of Onduvilla is possible at temperatures from -5 to +30 degrees. In the cold season, the speed of work depends on the condition of the repair compositions. With strong cooling, the adhesive properties of the mounting tapes are lost, and the sealants become more viscous. Therefore, consumables should be stored in a heated room, and during installation - kept in pockets.

Features of the installation of roofing elements

Mounting forceps

Fasten the end beam with a size of 40 * 40 mm along the bottom of the slope crate. Install gable elements, placing them along the edge of the roof from the eaves to the ridge. The overlap should be 8 cm. The transverse lines serve as a good guide. Mounting options for components are clearly shown in the photo.

Mounting the skate

Decorate the ridge elements. To do this, install covering aprons with an overlap of 4 cm on both slopes. Fasten the skates over them, taking into account the angle of the roof slope. If you use Ondulin roofing elements, the gaps must be closed with Onduvilla filler. In the same way, the ribs of a multi-pitched roof are formed - in this case, the joints of the slopes are additionally sealed with a breathable tape.

Onduvilla ventilated skates are also used to protect the slope joints. First, lay a breathable insulation pad along the rib, then close it with a roofing element with an overlap of 8 cm. Install special end caps on the ends of the ribs.

Installation of valleys

For laying the valleys, an additional crate is required. Install 50 mm thick timbers on the inside corners of the roof. The distance between their center and the rafters should be no more than 21 cm. Mount a continuous boardwalk at least 70 cm wide along the slope line.

Lay underlayment waterproofing to protect against leaks. Here you can use Ondutis superdiffusion membranes. Make sure that the overlap of the canvases is at least 30 cm.

Fix the valley on the resulting base. Installation of roofing elements is carried out in the direction from the eaves. The starting gutter is installed with an offset of 5-7 cm, which allows you to set the valley flush with the cornice line. The subsequent parts are laid with an overlap of 15 cm and fixed in all corners with wide-head nails.

Connection design

To carry out the work, you will need an Onduvilla covering apron and a specialized Onduflash-Super metal-coated tape. To begin, lay the apron around the chimney/along the wall and nail it into each wave of soft roofing.

Close the apron-to-wall/pipe joint with an appropriately sized strip of tape. Make sure that the sealing material extends at least 10-15 cm onto the vertical surface.

To fix the top edge of the tape, use metal profiles or wooden planks.

After finishing work, cover the bottom of the tape with an additional sheet of Onduvilla soft roofing.

Ventilation outlets

Use additional elements to ensure complete tightness of the connections and avoid future leaks. Onduvilla ventilation pipes perfectly match the "native" soft roof, and deflector caps reliably protect the channels from debris and precipitation. Installation is carried out as follows:

  • Cut an appropriately sized hole opposite 3 or 4 Onduvilla sheets. To do this, draw a line that coincides with the axis of the wave, and measure along it 13.5 cm from the top edge of the sheet. Set the leg of the compass at the end of the line and draw a circle with a diameter of 12 cm. Carefully cut it out with a jigsaw.
  • Mount the vent pipe. Make sure that the profile of its base coincides with the waves of the soft roof.
  • Lay the Onduvilla sheets over the base and secure the vent pipe with branded nails.

Important nuances

Prior to installation, Onduvilla must be stored in a horizontal position. It is advisable to keep the original packaging. If it has been damaged, it is necessary to protect the opened pallets from moisture and dirt. The soft roof cannot be stored near heating devices, the minimum distance is 1 meter.
