Danfoss radiator thermostats. How to choose a Danfoss thermostat and install it Temperature controller on a danfoss heating radiator instruction

14.06.2019 Heating

Installing a thermostat on a radiator is an opportunity to reduce heating costs, improve the microclimate in the house, as well as the careful use of earth's energy resources.

The motives may be different, but the solution is being implemented more and more often.

Many, choosing an equipment manufacturer, stop at Danfoss.

And not surprisingly, the products of a well-known brand are easy to find on the shelves of many stores.

The technology for the production of their thermostats based on gas-filled bellows is patented and is used in the company's own factories. If you also decide to purchase a Danfoss thermostat, the installation and operating instructions will come in handy.

The purpose of installing a thermostat is to maintain the temperature of the air in the house chosen by the consumer.

The design of the thermostat for radiators includes two elements that complement each other:

  1. thermostat (or thermostatic element).
  2. Danfoss thermostatic valve.

The valve is connected directly to the battery, and a thermostatic element is installed on it.

The basis of the basics is the thermostat. It is he who reacts to changes in ambient temperature and affects the valve that blocks the flow of coolant.

Thermostat Danfoss

Inside the thermostat head is a bellows (a corrugated chamber capable of changing dimensions) filled with gas. The gas, depending on the temperature, changes its state of aggregation (it condenses when cooled). This leads to a change in volume and pressure in the chamber. The chamber decreases in size, pulling the spool rod, which opens in the valve more clearance for the supply of coolant.

When heated, the reverse process of expansion and overlapping of the lumen occurs (the accepted standard is 2 V ° C excess of the air temperature above the set one).

When a comfortable temperature is set on the regulator scale, a certain compression of the tuning spring is set inside, which is interconnected with a certain gas pressure.

Danfoss manufactures gas-filled bellows as well as liquid-filled bellows. The latter are more inert, reacting to temperature changes more slowly.

Types and symbols:

  • RTS - liquid bellows;
  • RTD-G - gas bellows for one-pipe system, or two-pipe without pump;
  • RTD-N - gas bellows for two-pipe system, and systems with a circulation pump.

There are also modifications of thermoelements, in which:

  • Protection against reconfiguration by random persons is provided (an excellent option for public institutions and children's rooms).
  • There is a remote temperature sensor connected by a two-meter capillary tube, which can be installed away from the radiator, buried in a niche or stuffed with furniture, which gives a more accurate measurement result.
  • With a temperature range slightly less than conventional sensors for integration into a system where billing is done.

Floor heating system

Thermostats are also used for floor heating systems. A thermostat for underfloor heating is a must!

After all, driving liquid into the floor circuit, you need to lower its temperature from 60 - 90 V ° C to a comfortable 35 - 40 V ° C (in this case, the surface of the floor itself will be about 25 V ° C).

Flow meters are powerless if the pressure in the system jumps, if the air is heated, for example, from the sun, and even if the residents want to save on heating during their absence.

The thermomechanical regulator is best used for small rooms, about 10 m2.

For large areas use room thermostats with floor temperature sensors.

Mounting the thermostatic element

First of all, the valve is mounted on the radiator. To do this, the coolant supply is shut off.

  1. Marking is done on the supply pipe. The section to be cut must be the same length as the valve body minus the threaded connections.
  2. The heating pipe is cut, an extra piece is cut out.
  3. With the help of a lerka, or a die, on outside cut pipe is carved.
  4. The connection is processed with sanitary paste and fum tape.
  5. The valve body is screwed onto the resulting thread.
  6. Since the pipe cannot be twisted, with opposite side valve, an American union nut is twisted, and then screwed (with a hex wrench) into the radiator drive.
  7. The body of the device is screwed into its own union nut through a rubber washer. This connection does not need to be sealed somehow, the main thing is that it be clean.
  8. After the valve is installed on the radiator, the protective cap is removed from it (located perpendicular to the pipe).

The maximum temperature value is set on the thermal head, after which it is put on the valve with pressure (until it clicks).

Mounting the sensor

As already mentioned, a remote sensor is needed if the battery is built into the wall or is closed by something (furniture, screen, blackout curtains).

In one case of this element, a sensor and a tuning unit are combined.

  1. It is best to place the device on an open (but without drafts) section of the wall, at a height of about 1.4 m from the floor. You need to avoid places near devices that can greatly change the temperature of the environment - air conditioners, cookers etc.
  2. The device comes with a small mounting plate, which is fixed to the selected location with a pair of self-tapping screws.
  3. A capillary tube is wound inside the sensor. It is pulled to the desired length so that the device reaches the fixed bar.
  4. The capillary tube is carefully fixed on reverse side valve.
  5. The sensor is placed on the bar by a simple snap.

The microclimate in the house and air humidity are two inextricably linked concepts. for home and health, read about it in the article.

Setting a limit

Thermostats are based on physical laws. Therefore, you need to remember that the conditions in which the device is located can make some adjustments (for example, the distance from the heat source). There are indicative tables of correspondence between the regulator scale and temperature, which can be taken as a guide during installation. However, after the basic setup, you will need to “understand” your thermostat.

For this:

  1. Set the temperature on the handle with marks.
  2. An hour later, control measurements are carried out with a room thermometer at several points in the room.
  3. If the temperature is higher or lower, the readings on the handle are adjusted.

Proportional band - 2 °C. If you set the temperature to 20 °, then the device will keep the readings in the range from 20 to 22 ° C.

Sensor after installation on the radiator

The two pins that are included with the sensor will help set the limits for the minimum and maximum position of the thermocouple.

They are located at the bottom of the device:

  1. To set a limit at a mark, for example, "3", you need to pull out the limiter and set the sensor readings at the mark "3". Then the pin is inserted into the hole, which in this position is under the diamond icon.
  2. The second limiting threshold is set in the same way. The handle turns to the desired indicator, only the pin is inserted into the hole under the triangle icon.
You can lock the controller certain temperature(protects against accidental failure or childish pranks).

For this:

  1. Both pins are removed.
  2. The handle is placed on the desired indicator.
  3. In this position, the first pin is inserted into the hole located under the diamond.
  4. The second pin is in the hole under the triangle.

Danfoss thermostats have many positive feedback. This is a very easy to use device that does not require any attention after the initial installation and configuration. But the result will be a more comfortable temperature in the apartment, as well as in some cases, significant savings in budget funds.

Sometimes it becomes necessary to adjust the temperature in each a specific room. This can be done by installing a thermostat for a heating radiator. This is a small device that regulates the heat transfer of a heating battery. It can be used with all types of radiators, except for cast iron ones. One important point- the device can lower the initial temperature, but if there is not enough heating power, it cannot increase it.

The design of thermostats for heating radiators

The thermostat for a heating radiator consists of two parts - a valve (thermal valve) and a thermostatic head (thermostatic element, temperature controller). These products are produced under different sizes pipes and different types heating systems. The thermostatic head is removable; regulators of different types and even different manufacturers can be placed on the same valve - seat standardized.

The thermostat for a heating radiator consists of two parts - a special valve (valve) and a thermostatic head (regulator)

Both valves and regulators are different, so before you install a thermostat for a heating radiator, you will have to get at least a little familiar with its structure, functions and types.

Thermal valve - structure, purpose, types

The valve in the thermostat is very similar in structure to a conventional valve. There is a seat and a shut-off cone that opens/closes the gap for the flow of coolant. The temperature of the heating radiator is regulated in this way: the amount of coolant passing through the radiator.

Different valves are installed on single-pipe and two-pipe wiring. The hydraulic resistance of the valve to a single-pipe system is much lower (at least twice) - this is the only way to balance it. It is impossible to confuse the valves - it will not heat. For systems with natural circulation suitable valves for single pipe systems. When they are installed, the hydraulic resistance, of course, increases, but the system will be able to work.

Each valve has an arrow indicating the movement of the coolant. During installation, it is installed so that the direction of flow coincides with the arrow.

What materials

The valve body is made of corrosion-resistant metals, often additionally coated with a protective layer (nickel or chrome plated). There are valves from:

Of course, stainless steel the best option. It is chemically neutral, does not corrode, does not react with other metals. But the cost of such valves is high, it is difficult to find them. Bronze and brass valves are about the same in terms of service life. What is important in this case is the quality of the alloy, and it is carefully monitored well-known manufacturers. Whether or not to trust the unknown is a moot point, but there is one point that is better to track down. There must be an arrow on the body indicating the direction of flow. If it is not there, you have a very cheap product that is better not to buy.

By way of execution

Since radiators are installed different ways, valves are made straight (through) and angular. Choose the type that will be better for your system.

thermostatic heads

There are three types of thermostatic elements for heating thermostats - manual, mechanical and electronic. They all perform the same functions, but in different ways, provide different level comfort, have different possibilities.

Manual

Manual thermostatic heads work like a regular tap - turn the regulator in one direction or another, passing more or less coolant. The cheapest and most reliable, but not the most handy devices. To change the heat transfer, you must manually turn the valve.

Manual thermal head - the easiest and most reliable option

These devices are quite inexpensive, they can be placed at the inlet and outlet of the heating radiator instead of ball valves. Any of them can be adjusted.

Mechanical

A more sophisticated device that supports set temperature in automatic mode. The basis of this type of thermostatic head is a bellows. This is a small elastic cylinder that is filled with a temperature agent. A temperature agent is a gas or liquid that has a large coefficient of expansion - when heated, they greatly increase in volume.

The bellows supports the stem, blocking the flow area of the valve. Until the substance in the bellows is heated, the stem is raised. As the temperature rises, the cylinder begins to increase in size (gas or liquid expands), it presses on the rod, which more and more blocks the flow area. Less and less coolant passes through the radiator, it gradually cools down. The substance in the bellows also cools down, due to which the cylinder decreases in size, the rod rises, more coolant passes through the radiator, it starts to warm up a little. Then the cycle repeats.

gas or liquid

With such a device, the room temperature is fairly maintained at exactly +- 1°C, but in general the delta depends on how inert the material in the bellows is. It can be filled with some kind of gas or liquid. Gases respond faster to temperature changes, but are more difficult to produce technologically.

Liquid or gas bellows - no big difference

Liquids change volumes a little slower, but they are easier to produce. In general, the difference in the accuracy of maintaining the temperature is about half a degree, which is almost impossible to notice. As a result, most of the presented thermostats for heating radiators are equipped with thermal heads with liquid bellows.

The mechanical thermostatic head must be installed so that it is directed into the room. This way the temperature is measured more accurately. Since they have a fairly decent size, this method of installation is not always possible. For these cases, you can put a thermostat for a heating radiator with a remote sensor. The temperature sensor is connected to the head with a capillary tube. You can place it at any point where you prefer to measure the air temperature.

All changes in the heat transfer of the radiator will occur depending on the air temperature in the room. The only disadvantage of this solution is the high cost of such models. But the temperature is maintained more precisely.

Electronic

By size electronic thermostat for a heating radiator even more. The thermostatic element is even bigger. In addition to the electronic filling, two batteries are also installed in it.

The movement of the stem in the valve in this case is controlled by a microprocessor. These models have quite big set additional features. For example, the ability to set the temperature in the room by the hour. How is it fashionable to use? Doctors have long proven that it is better to sleep in a cool room. Therefore, at night, you can program the temperature lower, and in the morning, when it's time to wake up, it can be set higher. Comfortable.

The disadvantage of these models is big size, the need to monitor the discharge of batteries (enough for several years of operation) and the high price.

How to install

Put a thermostat for a heating radiator at the inlet or outlet heater- there is no difference, they work with equal success in both positions. How to choose a place to install?

According to the recommended installation height. There is such a point in technical specifications. Each device goes through a factory setting - they are calibrated for temperature control at a certain height and usually this is the upper radiator manifold. In this case, the heat regulator is installed at a height of 60-80 cm, it is convenient to manually adjust it if necessary.

If you have a lower saddle connection (pipes only fit from the bottom), there are three options - look for a device with the ability to install at the bottom, install a model with a remote sensor, or reconfigure the thermal head. The procedure is simple, the description must be in the passport. All you need is to have a thermometer and turn the head in one direction at certain moments, then in the other direction.

Standard installation - on fum-tape or linen winding with packing paste

The installation process itself is standard. The valve is threaded. Suitable fittings are selected under it or on metal pipe counter thread is cut.

One important point that those who want to put a thermostat for a heating radiator in apartment buildings. If you have a single-pipe wiring, they can only be installed if there is a bypass - a pipe section that stands in front of the battery and connects the two pipes to each other.

Otherwise, you will regulate the entire riser, which your neighbors will definitely not like. For such a violation, a very substantial fine can be issued. Therefore, it is better to put a bypass (if not).

How to adjust (reconfigure)

All thermostats are factory set. But their settings are standard and may not match your desired parameters. If something does not suit you in your work - you want it to be warmer / colder, you can reconfigure the thermostat for the heating radiator. This must be done with the heating on. You will need a thermometer. You hang it at the point where you will control the state of the atmosphere.

  • Close the doors, put the thermostat head in the leftmost position - fully open. The room temperature will start to rise. When it becomes 5-6 degrees higher than what you want, turn the knob all the way to the right.
  • The radiator starts to cool down. When the temperature drops to a value that you consider comfortable, start slowly turning the knob to the right and listen. When you hear that the coolant is noisy, and the radiator starts to warm up, stop. Remember what number is on the handle. It will need to be set to achieve the required temperature.

Adjusting the thermostat for the heating battery is not difficult at all. And you can repeat this action several times, changing the settings.

Advantages of our products

Save up to 46% energy

Radiator thermostats allows you to use exactly the amount of energy that is needed in this moment for supporting comfortable temperature in room. Different thermostatic elements cope with this task in different ways. Compared to a manual control valve, liquid-filled or paraffin-filled thermostats save 31%, and gas-filled thermostats save 36%. Use of electronic radiator thermostats Danfoss living eco saves up to 46% of heating energy.

*According to a study by the RWTH,
Aachen, Germany.

Fast reaction

Thermostats Danfoss The RA series are equipped with a gas-filled bellows. The heat capacity of a gas is much less than that of a liquid and, especially, of paraffin. As a result, gas-filled thermostats react much faster to changes in room temperature. This is why Danfoss temperature controllers maintain the temperature with greater accuracy and deliver greater energy savings. Radiator thermostats with a gas-filled thermostatic element (“gas”) are patented and manufactured exclusively by Danfoss.

Easy installation and setup

The adapter kit allows you to install the Danfoss living eco thermostat on most thermostatic valves on the market. See for yourself by watching this short video.

Reliable performance

Danfoss thermostats are fully adapted to work in Russian conditions. More than 40 years of experience in the operation of temperature controllers in Russia allows us to approve this. For the first time in Moscow, Danfoss thermostats were installed in 1964 in the Rossiya Hotel, where they served until its demolition.

Safety of thermal heads for heating radiators

Danfoss living eco thermostatic heads have a child lock feature. Exploration of the surrounding world will be safe even for the smallest ones.

Comfort in all areas

The amount of heat each room needs varies throughout the day. In the morning the sun shines through the windows on the east side of the house, at noon on the south, in the evening on the west. If you control the heating of the whole house according to the temperature in one room, the temperature in the other rooms will change during the day.

About Danfoss regulators

Why install a thermostat? To maintain a certain temperature in the premises.

The product consists of two parts that complement each other:

  1. Thermostat.
  2. thermostatic valve.

The Danfoss thermostatic valve is connected directly to the radiator, and the thermostat is already mounted on it.

The main thing is a thermostatic element that detects temperature changes and sends a signal to the valve that blocks the flow of heat carrier.

Inside the thermal head there is a bellows (a corrugated chamber that can change dimensions) with gas. Gas at a certain temperature changes its state (it condenses when cooled). This affects the change in volume and pressure in the chamber, which becomes smaller and pulls the spool rod behind it, which in turn opens a gap in the valve for the circulation of the heat carrier.

When heating occurs, the reverse expansion process starts and the gap is blocked (the standard is 2 V ° C above the specified temperature).

When the optimal degree is set on the scale of the device, a certain compression of the tuning spring appears inside, which is associated with a specific gas pressure.

Danfoss produces gas bellows and liquid bellows (more inert, slower to respond to temperature fluctuations).

Types and symbols

The abbreviations by which Danfoss heating thermostats are distinguished indicate the type of filler and the purpose of the device:

  • RTS is a liquid bellows;
  • RTD-G - gas powered, suitable for one- and two-pipe systems without a pump;
  • RTD-N - gas appliance for one- and two-pipe pump systems.

Danfoss RTR/RTD service thermostatic element with built-in temperature sensor

There are modifications that perform not only their main functions, but also many additional ones. For example, the option to protect against reconfiguration of set indicators. This is convenient when children are constantly in the room. The number of modes and variety of functions in each model is individual.

Popular models of Danfoss thermostats

The company's product range includes many different Danfoss battery thermostats. The following are popular:

  1. Regulator RTD marking 3640. It is used on 2-pipe heating systems. classical type. Equipped with an option that prevents the line from freezing in cold weather. The Danfoss RTD thermostat is used in domestic and industrial environment, has four divisions with marks in the form of Roman numerals.
  2. Designation RAX, as a rule, for products with liquid, which are used for mounting on unusual batteries or on heated towel rails. Outwardly very attractive and fit well into the design. The case has only divisions with Roman and Arabic numerals.
  3. The Danfoss RA-299 thermostat works on gas, has automatic temperature control, is produced in different colors. Quickly responds to temperature fluctuations. Used only for installation on classical systems heating.
  4. Living ECO has the option of room climate control. It is boldly installed in various administrative buildings and residential buildings. The product is distinguished by the presence of an LCD screen that displays all the necessary data on the thermal carrier. In addition, the case has the main buttons for the mode settings.
  5. There are also series with many functions, they are suitable for heated towel rails, and for different areas of equipment for heating. Can be right or left handed.

Danfoss Living Connect thermostat

All Danfoss thermostats for heating radiators come with parts that make it easy to mount the device and its future use.

Installing a Danfoss thermal head

The device is mounted precisely on the pipe of the hot water circuit. Installation does not imply anything complicated, even in the case of design options, installation occurs according to one principle. The work is carried out in stages:

  1. A marking is made on the supply pipe to indicate the area that needs to be cut. It is worth considering the dimensions of the valve body. The threaded element is taken away, which will go directly into the pipe.
  2. The heating is turned off and the liquid descends to prevent a flood in the house.
  3. An extra section of the pipe is cut off according to the marks, and a die is threaded on the outer part of the cut.
  4. The joint is treated with a special paste for plumbing work (the manufacturer is not important).
  5. A valve is screwed onto the thread made by the die and tightly tightened with a washer. It is not necessary to additionally fix the connection for tightness. The actions performed are sufficient for a reliable joint.
  6. The fuse is removed, the maximum indicator “five” is set on the regulator, and a case with a scale is put on top.
  7. All joints are checked and the heating device is connected to the entire heating system.

If the Danfoss thermostat was connected correctly, then there should be no problems. It is worth checking the operation of the device before the first opening and closing of the valve.

Setting the thermostat

All devices of the manufacturer differ externally and in terms of technical characteristics, however, they are still configured in the same way. To implement it, you need to look into the operating instructions and familiarize yourself with the designation of the modes that are indicated on the device case. Indicators may vary, it all depends on the model.

Next, to adjust the Danfoss thermostat, set it to the desired temperature. This can be done by moving the rotating element in a certain direction. If you have installed a device with buttons, all you need to do is press the "plus" or "minus" button.

It is possible to specify intermediate values when they the best way suitable for creating temperature regime in room. A couple of minutes pass and heating system will have time to adjust to the specified parameters and will heat until the optimal microclimate is obtained. There is also a setting for refrigeration equipment.

The operation of the regulator in the underfloor heating system

Danfoss floor heating thermostat is an important thing for the entire heating system. The device has a responsible function for adjusting the temperature to a comfortable 25 ° C.

Flow meters will not help if the pressure is unstable, the air heats up, for example, sunbeams, and residents seek to save on heating while they are not at home.

Experts advise installing a mechanical regulator in small rooms of about 10 m².

In large rooms, Danfoss room thermostats are used with temperature sensors warm floor.

The Danfoss thermostatic head deservedly has a lot of positive reviews. This is an easy-to-use element that does not require special attention by the owner after installation and adjustment. As a result, a favorable microclimate is provided in the house, and in some cases, tangible money savings.
