The most reliable glue for wood. How to glue a tree - advice from experienced craftsmen. What is the water resistance class of the adhesive: D1, D2, D3 and D4

15.06.2019 Accessories

One of the most popular materials in construction and many other manufacturing industries is wood. Therefore, it is often necessary to glue wooden parts for the purpose of obtaining For this, an extensive range is offered various formulations, thanks to which there is no task easier than gluing a tree to a tree.

Types of glue

Of all the types of adhesive that differ in their composition and characteristics, it is necessary to choose the right one for the solution of the corresponding task in order to obtain the perfect result.

  • quickly and efficiently glues wood, leaving almost no traces. But when exposed to water, as well as low and high temperatures, it partially loses its properties.
  • "Moment" is a universal waterproof glue for gluing wood and more. It is also effective for gluing other materials to wood. Provides instant grip.
  • for wood does not lose its properties under the influence of high temperatures, does not dry out and does not crumble. Therefore, it is most often used in carpentry.
  • differs in the increased adhesion at pasting of firm wood. Full adhesion is achieved 20 hours after application. Not afraid of moisture, resistant to high temperatures and prolonged loads.
  • Casein glue has the same characteristics as polyurethane. The disadvantage is its ability to change the color of the glued wood.
  • suitable for all types of wood, dries completely after 24 hours and leaves no residue.

Which composition to choose

When deciding how to glue a tree to a tree, it is worth considering the versatility of using the adhesive composition. Some types are suitable only for working with a certain type of wood, others are able to glue absolutely different breeds tree.

It has great importance and what specific goals need to be achieved, for example, glue broken wooden objects or perform facade work. An important role is played by the composition of the adhesive and its quality.

household recipes

There are many recipes for how to make high-quality wood glue with your own hands. To do this, you can buy ready-made casein in powder form or get it at home. Put low-fat milk in a warm place for souring. When it is fermented, filter with gauze and rinse the casein remaining as a result of this process in water and boil to remove fat. Then lay it out on paper, dry well and mix with borax (1 part borax to 10 parts casein) until the consistency of the dough. Dilute the resulting mass with water (2 parts) and apply the resulting adhesive immediately, because it hardens after 2 hours.

General rules for gluing

There are rules for gluing wooden parts that must be observed regardless of which adhesive composition is chosen.

First you need to thoroughly clean the surface. This can be done using sandpaper or a file. After that, dry the parts and thin layer apply the adhesive with a brush and rub in gently. All surfaces intended for connection are lubricated with glue, then they are tightly pressed against each other using a press or in another way until the composition is completely hardened.

When working with any glue, precautions are required, because even the most harmless composition can sometimes cause the strongest allergic reaction. Therefore, gluing wood must be carried out with rubber gloves. If the glue still gets on the skin, you need to gently wipe it off and thoroughly wash the affected area with soap. If the composition gets into the eyes, immediately rinse them with running water.

If you carefully understand how to glue wood to wood, and strictly follow the instructions for using the adhesive, then the junction of the parts can be much stronger than the wood itself.

Making furniture with your own hands is becoming increasingly popular due to the high cost. finished products and thanks to a large number source materials that appeared in the public domain. At home, with a minimum set of appropriate tools, it is realistic to assemble viable furniture that will serve properly and please with its appearance. One of the most popular joining methods is gluing, which makes it possible to obtain strong, monolithic parts. Gluing can be used as an independent fastener or as a duplicating one, when applied external elements, such as dowels, dowels or self-tapping screws.

Do-it-yourself glued wood

Before gluing, the parts are processed, this is done not only to clean the surface, but also allows you to open the wood pores. When applied, the adhesive composition penetrates through the pores into the structure of the wood, into the intercellular space, and upon solidification forms a set of the thinnest threads(cobwebs), reliably "stitching" the workpieces together. The strength of a correctly made seam exceeds the strength of the wood itself; when testing for fracture, the part breaks not at the place of gluing, but along the whole tree.

Gluing a tree allows you to get products with better parameters than massive ones. In the process of gluing, elements that are suitable in texture and shades are selected, damaged, cracked and knotty areas are rejected. As a result, the strength of the glued parts is greater than that of the usual one, and by gluing the thinnest veneer onto the front surfaces, the products are given the appearance of the most valuable rocks. Wood glued according to all the rules warps, cracks and cracks much less than solid wood.

How to glue wood. Technology

There are several ways to connect parts when gluing.

  • Gluing wood onto a smooth joint - joining smooth details without increasing the penetration area.
  • Gluing on a microthorn - an increase in the penetration area by 2.5 - 5 mm due to the creation of a jagged relief on the part (using a milling cutter).

  • Bonding on a toothed spike – increase in the penetration area by 10 mm due to the creation of a toothed spike.

  • Gluing on a tongue-and-groove (thorn-groove, dovetail, oblique spike) - additional grip due to the groove connection.

Although in certain situations, when it is assumed special conditions applications, relevant slot and spike connections, in most cases, the parts are glued to a smooth fugue. Modern adhesive compositions penetrate deep into the structure and create a strong seam without additional sampling of wood.

How to glue boards together. Options

The wood to be glued must have a moisture index in the range of 8 - 12%, maximum - 18%. If there is a need to glue wet parts, use special composition, during the hardening process, it draws moisture from the wood. When gluing blanks with different moisture content, a difference of more than 2% is not allowed in order to avoid internal stress in the glue line due to deformation of the wetter part. The temperature of the glued blanks varies between 15 - 20⁰С, so the work is carried out in warm rooms(18 - 22⁰С). In the cold, most compositions crystallize, which leads to a deterioration in the quality of gluing and makes the process difficult.

The final preparation of wood (planing, jointing, sanding) is carried out immediately before gluing in order to increase the permeability of the adhesive and avoid warping. It is important not only to select parts according to their dimensions, structure and external data, but also to arrange them correctly.

  • When gluing along the length, only one type of sawing is used - tangential or radial;
  • When gluing, both in length and in width, alternation is not allowed different parts wood - the core is laid with the core, sapwood (young, extreme part) with sapwood;
  • Annual rings of adjacent blanks from boards or bars should be directed in different directions or at an angle to each other from 15⁰.

The standard thickness of furniture panels is 2 cm, but in order to glue wooden shields at home, when choosing boards for a shield, the estimated waste during processing is taken into account, so the workpiece is selected with a thickness of up to 2.5 cm. The excess will be removed during the initial processing, when eliminating defects, and after gluing, when grinding the shield. If dissolved for furniture board a board 5 cm thick, two blanks are obtained with the same texture and shade, which increases the decorative effect of the product. For shields, boards of wood of the same species are selected, up to 120 mm wide, so that it is possible to process the edges of the shield with high quality, the length of the blanks should have a margin (2 - 5 cm).

Adhesives

Adhesives used for the manufacture of laminated wood fall into two main groups.

Synthetic - obtained on the basis of resins or polyvinyl acetate dispersions (PVA). They are characterized increased strength of the resulting compound, moisture resistance, biostability. The disadvantages include the presence harmful substances, which may stand out in environment during operation and further operation. This is "famous" for compositions based on phenol-formaldehyde resins. Modern PVA dispersions and their derivatives are non-toxic and are commonly used in the domestic area and are considered universal for wood. The bulk of synthetic mixtures are ready for use. The epoxy adhesive needs finishing, to work with it the hardener included in the kit is mixed with epoxy resin.

Natural mixtures - animal, vegetable, mineral. They are safe, give a strong connection, but are produced in the form of semi-finished products that are prepared before use. How to glue a tree with them: when preparing, you must strictly follow the instructions and observe the dosages, otherwise the quality of the glue will not allow you to get a strong connection. To prepare the adhesive, it is usually necessary to dilute the powder concentrate with water to the desired consistency (may require a certain swelling period) or to melt the solid particles. Direct exposure to fire is not allowed, apply " water bath”, on which the mass with the addition of water after swelling melts to a homogeneous consistency.

How to glue a tree

When gluing wooden surfaces glue is applied to both parts in an even layer. The thickness of the layer depends on the type of glue, its consistency and the type of surfaces to be glued - the thinner the wood, the thinner the layer. The glue should moisten the part, but not excessively; when connecting the elements, an even roller should stand out. Adhesive streaks are removed from the surface as soon as they grab a little, with a scraper or spatula. Cured excess glue greatly spoils appearance details and complicates their further processing.

How to glue a wooden blank.

After applying the adhesive, the parts withstand a certain period of time, this allows the composition to penetrate deeper, at the same time excess moisture evaporates, the concentration of adhesives increases. During exposure, it is not allowed to air the seam in a draft or dust it. Some types of natural glue (bone, skin) must be applied hot, instantly fastening the parts without aging, since the composition loses its properties as it cools.

Wood Gluing Tool

To obtain the most durable connection, when gluing, the wood is pressed in - compressed by means of special presses. At home, for these purposes, improvised tools and means are used - a vice, clamps, cam devices, frames made of metal corner with clamping mechanisms. The pressure during wood pressing is maintained in the range from 0.2 to 1.2 MPa. In production, large values are possible, at home such indicators are enough for the structural details to stick together.

Glued wood with your own hands.

Subject to the gluing technology, the adhesive seam is strong and reliable, and, unlike the method of connecting parts with metal fasteners, does not spoil the appearance.

For fans of creating household items on their own, a topic is open on FORUMHOUSE. How to organize a convenient corner for working with wood can be found in the article. The video about wooden elements in a country house shows interesting products made by users of the portal.

For carpentry and furniture repair, adhesives based on polyvinyl acetate are used - PVA, PVA-A, PVA-B, PVA-E, EPVA, as well as "Casein Glue" , "Bone Glue", "Synthetic carpentry". Polyvinyl acetate adhesives form a clean and strong seam, however, with low water resistance. More water resistant "Casein Glue" and "Synthetic carpentry". The latter is a two-component, consists of resin - a viscous mass from white to brown and hardener - powder oxalic acid white color. The hardener is dissolved in half a glass hot water(a 10% solution is obtained), then the resin and solution are thoroughly mixed until a homogeneous mass is obtained. The time during which the prepared portion must be consumed is 20 minutes.

"CASEIN GLUE" Sold as a white powder. 250 g of it is dissolved in 1 cubic dm of water heated to 60 ... 70 degrees and incubated for at least one and a half hours. Glue is best applied with a brush or brush made of bast fibers.

Glue "BONE" sold in tiles that are crushed, poured cold water and kept for about a day. Then the water is drained and the swollen glue is boiled “in a water bath” - in a saucepan placed in another, large in size, into which water is poured. When the mass acquires a homogeneous consistency, the glue is ready.

Connections based on polyvinyl acetate, casein and bone adhesives are very strong, withstand loads up to 50...60 kgf/sq. cm.

This indicator is much lower for adhesives. AGO(30 kgf/sq.cm), "SYNTHETIC JOINERY"- (up to 25 kgf/sq.cm), BF-2 (20 kgf/sq.cm), "KITTIFIX" and "MEKOL"(10 kgf/sq.cm) and "MARS"(5 kgf / sq. cm).

When gluing, the wood must be sufficiently dry, and the moisture content of the connecting parts does not differ much, otherwise the structure will inevitably “lead”.

The glue fills the pores of the wood, opened during planing and sawing, which ensures the strength of the seam. If the pores are closed, for example, with an old layer of putty, glue or paint, the connection will be fragile. Therefore, it is important to clean surfaces properly.

Their increased roughness will only benefit.

Old layers of polyvinyl acetate and animal adhesives can be removed with water heated to 60-70 degrees. For this, it is enough for 2 ... 3 hours to put a rag moistened with warm water. The swollen layer of glue is then easily peeled off. Other adhesives, as well as paints, are removed with special washes - for example, AFT-1, BEM, R-4, SD spec., SP-7. If one is not effective enough, use another. Glues BF and casein have to be removed with a rasp or emery cloth.

Paradoxically, the bonding will be stronger, the thinner the adhesive line. Therefore, when fixing furniture spikes in the eyes, the old coatings are cleaned very carefully so that excessive gaps do not appear. If the spike sits loosely in the eye, you need to insert spacers made of veneer or a layer of wood separated from plywood.

When glued wooden blocks, for their extensions it is better to make a “mustache” or “toothed” connection. In the first case, the bevels of the bars are prepared so that the parts fit snugly against one another. The length of the connection should be 8 ... 12 times the width of the part. This ratio must also be adhered to with a “toothed” connection: the teeth (length about 40 mm, width about 10 mm) are cut in detail according to the pattern with a hacksaw.

Glue is applied to both surfaces to be joined. For the strength of the seam, it is necessary to load or clamp the parts in the clamp for 25 ... 30 minutes. After the seam has hardened, the product should not be loaded for a day.

A special issue is gluing broken skis or parts wooden boat. The best for this are epoxy adhesives - "EPOXY PUTTY", EDP, EPO. The main thing is that the seam is thin, and the product in the place to be glued during the setting of the glue must be tightly clamped or well bandaged.

Skis do this. The main component of the epoxy adhesive, before introducing the hardener into it, is diluted with acetone to such a consistency that it flows into the gap. A thin wooden wedge is inserted into the crack and the upper side of the damaged ski is sealed with a wide adhesive tape. After that, a hardener is introduced into the glue and the crack is quickly filled with it. Then the wooden wedge is removed, the ski is tightly bandaged. The excess glue squeezed out of the crack is removed with a spatula or a piece of plywood. The lower surface of the ski at the place of gluing is wiped with acetone. The ski is left for a day in a horizontal position with the bottom side up.

And now - about gluing metals to wood. It is best to use rubber adhesives here - 88N, KR-1, "ELASTOSIL-2", Zh-3. They are also applied to both surfaces to be glued (this increases the strength of the joint by 5 ... 7 times compared to one-sided spreading), and the seam is loaded with a pressure of 4 ... 5 kgf / sq. cm or clamped in a clamp by 3 ... 5 min.

Wood with metals can be bonded with adhesives 88N, 88NP, KR-1, Zh-3 and contact method. To do this, glue is applied to both surfaces and allowed to dry for an hour. After that, they are wiped with a swab moistened with acetone, the parts are connected and the seam is loaded, providing a pressure of about 7 kgf / sq. cm. After 10 ... 12 hours, an adhesive seam is formed that can withstand loads up to 5 kgf / sq. cm.

Approximately the same result gives the use of glue "Moment", but at a shutter speed three times shorter. True, the seams formed by these adhesives often turn out to be creeping - when loaded along the seam, the parts can move, but the seam will nevertheless remain strong.

Glue is most suitable for covering wood with veneer (single-layer plywood, or veneer) "SYNTHETIC JOINERY", since it forms a completely colorless seam. Can also be used "CASEIN". But polyvinyl acetate adhesives are less suitable here due to low water resistance, while bone glue is simply inconvenient to work with, in addition, it forms a colored seam.

If glue is applied to both surfaces - both to the wooden base and to the veneer - then the veneer will immediately curl into a tube, and when the junction of the individual sheets is straightened, they will disperse and cracks will appear around them. Therefore, only the surface of the wooden base is smeared with glue and dry sheets of veneer are applied to it. For 40 minutes, they are pressed with a load so that the pressure in the seam reaches 6 ... 8 kgf / sq. cm. Completely the seam is cured in 6 hours.

When using glue "SYNTHETIC JOINERY", which, as already mentioned, is two-component, you can not mix the resin and hardener in advance, but apply them to the product in turn: first a layer of the hardener solution, and then a layer of resin. After that, a sheet of dry veneer is applied and pressed with a load. An adhesive seam is formed that is strong enough, but fragile. It withstands action cold water, but in warm (60 degrees) it quickly collapses.

PVC decorative films and paper laminates are best glued to wood with rubber adhesives. "ELASTOSIL-2", 88N, KR-1, Zh-3. The underside of the plank is useful

polish with fine sandpaper. Adhesives are applied to both surfaces to be joined, a film or plastic is applied to wooden product, carefully "squeezing out" air bubbles from the seam, and apply a load for 20 minutes (about 3 ... 4 kgf / sq. cm). The seam is fully cured within 10 hours, and the adhesive "ELASTOSIL-2"- for 3 days. When gluing the latter, it is necessary that the surfaces are absolutely dry, and during setting, no moisture gets into the seam.

Fabrics are firmly connected to wood with polyvinyl acetate adhesives and BF-6. However, both are not without drawbacks. The first is characterized by low water resistance, the second forms a seam painted in yellow. When using polyvinyl acetate glue, fabric and wood are smeared with it and a small load is applied for 10 minutes. After 12 hours, the seam is completely cured. Glue Bf-6 also applied to both surfaces, but in two layers. The first is dried, and then the second is applied to it. When it is still not completely dry, the fabric and wood are applied to each other and the glue line is ironed through the wet rag with a hot iron until it is dry.

Wood belongs to natural materials, which a person constantly uses for construction, manufacturing various designs and items used in Everyday life. To provide effective work with wood, a reliable and durable composition for fixing is needed, which is glue, which is available on the market in a wide variety of types.

Characteristics

On the modern market new types of adhesives for working with wood are constantly appearing, and products that have been used for a long time are being improved to occupy a leading position in the line of these products along with new products. When choosing an adhesive, one should dwell on the characteristics of the product, in addition, the type of materials with which to work is considered an important factor. Based on these nuances, the compositions can differ significantly.

It is also necessary to take into account the conditions in which the product or structure will be used in the future, since there is no universal product that is ideal for all types of wood gluing without exception.

It is worth highlighting a number of characteristics of the adhesive:

  • Moisture resistance of products - this property of the material is indicated on the label with the letter "D". There are several options for the water resistance of the composition - class D2, D3, D4. The higher this value, the better performance glue.
  • The composition must be non-toxic.
  • The strength level of the formed joint. In most cases, woodworking requires a high-strength material.
  • Product density.

  • Adhesion to various grounds- a tree can be securely fixed not only with similar raw materials, but also with concrete, glass, rubber, fabric, mirror, tile; there are compounds for gluing wood and metal on sale, as well as products used in shipbuilding, etc.
  • The period of complete solidification of the substance.
  • Thermal resistance of products.
  • The resistance of the adhesive to the development of microorganisms.
  • In some cases, very important point is the color of the substance - the composition can be transparent or repeat the color of the tree, in addition, there are white and black products.

Compound

Considering the composition of the product, it can be divided into two groups:

  • one-component compositions for gluing;
  • two-component materials.

The first category includes glue, which is sold in liquid form, already completely ready for application to the working base. You can also find the composition in the form of glue-foam. The second group of products includes formulations that require dilution and mixing of two ingredients in order to obtain a substance for bonding materials. As a rule, such a product is polymer composition, which is marked accordingly - the first component is designated by the letter "A", the second - "B", the last is the hardener.

The composition is prepared immediately before work, strictly following the indicated dilution instructions. Usually used for mixing special tool, after complete dissolution of the components of the two-component adhesive, an elastic and homogeneous contact product is formed. Products may vary in color.

Kinds

Based on the purpose and ingredients used to make wood glue, a wide range of products is on sale. The most popular type of composition is PVA, it is familiar to everyone since childhood. This substance allows you to glue paper, wood and wood-containing materials. Its main requirement is the moisture-absorbing capacity of raw materials. The environmentally friendly composition is a thick white liquid, which becomes colorless when solidified. The main characteristics of the product include the fact that the glue dries quickly, is sold ready for use, the composition is easily removed from the base if necessary, it can be diluted with water. On sale you can find different kinds products with different areas of application.

Epoxy adhesive refers to two-component products, solidification of the composition occurs without the participation of air in the reaction. This product can be used not only for gluing wood, the material is often used to work with other types of raw materials. During the preparation of the composition, it is necessary to strictly observe the proportions, since errors in dosage will lead to a foaming mass unsuitable for gluing. The solidification period of the substance varies depending on the brand of product.

Glue BF not so long ago belonged to the group of the strongest and most durable products for working with wooden bases. The scope of the composition includes gluing wood, iron, PVC, polyurethane foam and other raw materials. There are several types of this composition, but moisture-resistant BF-2 or BF-4 is best for fixing wood. Products are distinguished by a rather specific material processing technology, which boils down to applying a layer, drying and subsequent compression of the elements with each other - this technique is necessary for the strength of the splicing line.

Compositions that are resistant to various temperatures are represented by synthetic substances and varieties of materials of the epoxy group. Among the list of products belonging to this category, one can single out the composition, which is sold in the form of a rod. They work with him with a pistol. It is used to repair furniture, when modeling various designs.

Joiner's adhesive composition is considered furniture, since it is in demand in this particular area of \u200b\u200bproduction. in addition, the products are used for repairing musical instruments. The reason why such a product has not received wide popularity is the complexity of the work, because it is sold in a dry form, which requires a number of works to prepare it for use.

It includes several varieties - sturgeon, skin, bone glue. These are environmentally friendly products that are made from organic substances. Products are sold in granules, glue is also produced in the form of grains. Fish glue is mainly used as a professional repair compound. musical instrument. The latter refers to gelatin products. Main Feature such glue for wood is the ability to soak the connection in water, as a result, the elements will move away from each other.

Syndeticone composition is necessary for fixing wood to wood. This is a homemade product, which contains sugar, slaked lime and wood glue.

Polyurethane adhesive- super strong material that has high quality characteristics , refers to expensive products. Among the indisputable advantages, it is worth highlighting the moisture and frost-resistant nature of the product, due to which the composition is recommended for working with wood both indoors and outdoors. Moisture and frost-resistant composition has the effect of filling the plane, providing protection for materials and their joints. The expanding composition is allowed to work in the temperature range from -30 to +100 degrees. Can be used for hardwood.

Casein glue for wood has a completely natural composition. Such products are sold in the form of granules or you can cook it yourself at home. The composition is used for MDF, chipboard, fiberboard, for parquet, in printing and painting. With the help of casein composition, elite furniture is made.

Among the disadvantages of the product, it should be noted the hygroscopicity of the material, as well as the possibility of mold formation on its surface, but with proper storage there are no unpleasant situations with the composition.

Paste adhesives are used as assembly products to seal small voids that prevent moisture from penetrating. They are heat resistant and tolerate cold well. A heat-resistant product for gluing wood is used infrequently, however, for work with uneven bases, the product will be an indispensable assistant.

Manufacturer rating

For wood, ready-made adhesives are more in demand. synthetic basis. Among the brands that positive side have established themselves in the market for such products, it is worth highlighting several manufacturers.

Titebond- compositions that are produced by an American company. Product specialization - the manufacture of furniture from wood and wood-containing materials, work with floor coverings, including tiled, finishing of various structures with wooden elements. The compositions include artificial and natural components, do not contain solvents and resins, which ensures a high level of adhesion of the bases to each other. In the review of the products of this manufacturer, the product "Titebond ii premium" should be highlighted, which is recommended for fixing paper products, wooden elements, is in demand for the manufacture of doors and window blocks, chairs and other furniture. Products are allowed for operation for work outside and inside the premises. With the help of such adhesive compositions, facades are decorated with wooden fittings.

"Moment"- products of a German concern, widely used in the industrial and domestic sectors, the composition is relatively cheap, therefore it is convenient for minor and major repairs. Quite often, with the help of this product, kitchen utensils are repaired - waterproof glue glues mugs, cutting boards etc.

"Titanium"- composition of universal purpose, qualitatively glues wood, glass, plastic and paper. It is sold in different containers - from 60 g to 1 liter. Among the existing assortment, one can single out glue-mastic, which is used for repair and finishing works with wood.

Application

To provide high level the strength of the connecting seam should be correctly approached to prepare the elements for fixation. The wood must be well sanded, sawdust removed, and dust or dirt removed. If you plan to work with wood and porcelain or glass, acrylic surface or plastic, the material must be degreased. Acetone works well for this.

Two-component polymer product offers multiple application options- in the first case, the compositions are mixed, forming a homogeneous composition, in the second variant, each ingredient is applied to one of the materials, after which they are fixed with each other.

Varieties of wood glue for wood are applied in two layers, allowing the previous one to harden a little. For flat elements you can apply one layer, evenly distributing it along the location of the fibers on the material. For a more efficient connection, the elements must be placed under a press or pressed against each other in some other way.

Quick-drying formulations do not need additional pressure. However, attention should be paid to the outflow of the substance at the junction - all excess must be promptly removed from the bases.

An important nuance when working with glue is safety measures, since even organic or one-component products can cause an allergic reaction in a person. Therefore, care must be taken to protect skin and eye.

Which is better to choose?

There are a number of points where It is worth focusing your attention when buying products:

  • For gluing wooden components forever, it would be more correct to give preference to a composition based on a synthetic base.
  • Bonding of structural elements, in which it may be necessary to dismantle the fixed parts, should be carried out with organic-based adhesives.
  • For light woods, "Joiner" is most suitable. Based on the opinions of experts, casein formulations darken over time, which will make the connecting seam expressive against the general background. A similar option for carpentry in most cases is not suitable.
  • When buying PVA, it is worth checking its uniformity. The division of the composition into several fractions will indicate that the product was stored or transported in violation of the conditions, as a result of which the adhesive was at sub-zero temperature and was frozen. It is no longer possible to use such a composition in the work.

Wooden products have been valued at all times, so many craftsmen love this material. Making small models requires care and accuracy. Fasteners in such cases are not used, because they often spoil the appearance. How about gluing wood to wood? Modern manufacturers offer a wide range of products that will qualitatively connect the named parts.

When creating wooden structures, gluing is the most important stage. Even the most experienced craftsmen sometimes make mistakes that cause great disappointment. After all, the blanks become spoiled because of this, and all the work needs to be redone.

What is the best glue to use?

To date, there are many adhesive materials that are used for carpentry needs:

  • polyurethane compounds;
  • contact adhesive;
  • different types of PVA adhesives;
  • epoxy resin.

Each master always has several of the presented substances in stock. So, how to glue wood to wood? Suitable option choose based on certain features future project:

  • tree features;
  • the conditions under which the product will be used;
  • the degree of load that will fall on the seam.

Glue Features

When choosing glue, you should also pay attention to its composition. It must be resistant to temperature changes, water and light. The most popular today include the following:

  • "BF";
  • PVA for wood;
  • industrial adhesive for working with a wooden surface.

Glue "BF" is used by many wood craftsmen due to the minimum drying time. The composition is not afraid of corrosion, decay. It is resistant to oil, gasoline, water.

PVA for wood is a non-toxic, cheap and practical substance that can reliably glue wood parts together. Their final adhesion occurs after 24 hours.

Industrial adhesives are waterproof, able to fasten various types of wood together. At the final stage of work, this composition does not spoil the working tools.

PVA glue

It is an ideal substance for joining wood parts. It is environmentally friendly, not harmful to human health, non-toxic. It is easy to apply on the surface of any configuration. The connection can withstand an ultimate load of up to 60 kg/cm². The substance is characterized long term storage. PVA glue is actively used in the manufacture of furniture.

Which PVA is better for gluing a tree is the choice of each master. Its only drawback is the low rate of moisture resistance.

Glue for wood "BF"

Many are interested in the better to glue wood to wood. Glue series "BF" allows you to securely connect different types of surfaces. To date, such modifications of the adhesive are popular: BF-2 and BF-4. The first one is used for internal works, the second - for outdoor.

A high-quality connection can be achieved by applying two layers:

  • the first - primer - must dry for 1 hour;
  • the second - the final one - dries out within a short period of time.

How to glue wood to wood

Before proceeding with gluing wooden parts, it is necessary to prepare the surface:

  1. The fastened areas of wood should be cleaned of dust and dirt. To do this, go over the surface with a file or sandpaper. It must be sanded to a uniform state.
  2. Carpenter's glue should be applied in a thin layer on both surfaces. In this case, it should be rubbed a little. An exception is the connection of wooden surfaces with polyurethane adhesive. It is applied only on one surface, and the second is slightly moistened with water.
  3. The adhesive layer must be uniform, in the required amount, since an excess of the substance does not improve the quality of the connection, but only contributes to the waste of material. In addition, the surfaces are smeared with excess, and this adds work to the master at the stage of finishing the wooden product.
  4. The parts are connected and placed under a press for a certain time, which is indicated by the manufacturer on the packaging.

The most reliable bonding of wooden parts when connecting a tenon-groove. In this case, only the walls of the groove and the cheeks of the spike are lubricated. Such a connection is very reliable and durable.

The adhesive should be applied as described above. After all, having missed the shoulders, you will not improve the quality of gluing. In this case, only excess will appear, which in the future will have to be removed.

How to apply glue

The main rule for applying glue to the surface of a tree is its uniform distribution, and squeezing a substance out of a tube does not contribute to this. How to glue a tree?

For uniform application, the substance should be smeared. Often, a brush with stiff bristles is used for such purposes. But experienced experts recommend using a toothbrush. It has bristles of optimal stiffness and will be able to evenly and accurately distribute the composition over the surface.

Surface preparation: degreasing

Many experts argue that when gluing wooden elements, degreasing the surface is not required. But with oily wood species, such a procedure will not be superfluous. This can be done with white spirit.

It is also necessary to degrease surfaces when gluing dissimilar elements, for example, with plastic, glass. In this case, only one surface is degreased.

Do clamps guarantee a good grip?

The strength of the connection directly depends on the accuracy of fitting parts and the quality of their processing with glue. The amount of clamping force is practically not important here, so it is not necessary to tighten the clamps too much. A sign of good contact pressure is a small amount of adhesive that has come through.

Specialists rarely use clamps. Woodworkers who make small items use scotch tape or masking tape. With well-fitted joints, this is enough.

Cleaning the surface of dried glue

It seems that the main thing is to decide how to glue wood to wood. But it is important that this process is accurate. All excess must be removed when the adhesive has completely hardened or immediately after application. Deciding to sand the surface of wetted wood ahead of time, you can get an even greater aesthetic defect. And already hardened glue can be cut off with a chisel or cleaned by grinding, movements along the fibers.

Final stage

On the final stage manufacture of any wooden structure held decorative trim products. But first you should check if there are any dirty spots left on the product. After all, traces of dried glue will appear under a layer of decorative material.
